[29] Newt

You were chosen to be a runner.

For the past few minutes, Newt and you had been arguing. It consisted of shouting at each other, both so desperately feeling the need to explain yourselves. At this point Newt lost every bit of patience that was left. 

"I just do not want you to go into the maze!" Newt shouted, storming towards you and making you back up so quickly that you hissed when your back hit the wall. With one hand next to your head, he made sure you wouldn't sneak away. 

"But why not, Newt?" You whispered, prodding your finger in his chest while speaking. "Right now, I'm our best chance. Maybe even the only one." 

That made Newt sigh, releasing his hand from the wall and dropping it next to his body. He kept quiet. 

"I'm serious, answer my question," you said, "Why not?" 

"Because I can't stand the thought of losing you. I can't even think about you gettin hurt because-" He paused, shaking his head and raking his hand through his hair roughly. "I'm shucking in love with you, [your name]."

You gasped softly. "but I-" you stuttered.

"Please spare me." Newt said, biting his lip after. He already predicted you wouldn't feel the same way, but he was not yet ready to hear it from you personally. 

"I think I have to go," you whispered, convincing yourself that that was the right thing to do, even though you weren't sure yourself. All you knew was that you weren't ready for confrontation with your own feelings yet. "I've to go." You said again, brushing past Newt in a hurry and leaving the room.

Newt was left alone in the cold and dark room. It was just a matter of time before he would have to see you run into that maze and with the possibility of not returning.  He already knew that that would be the day he will break, as his heart was already waiting to be broken. Because just now, it had chipped already.

The original ending to this chapter was happy but now it's sort of a cliffhanger.
