Prologue

Today is my 17th birthday, but its also exactly 2 years since Luke left me. But my best friends Ash, Calum, and Michael tell me to stop thinking about him. If only they knew how hard that is I'm not like them. I cant cut off my humanity. Yep, you heard me right, My best friends and Luke are vampires. I, myself, am a vampire hunter, but I'm also a witch. How are me and my best friends friends? When your supposed to be enemies. The answer, We were best friends long before they became vampires. I had no idea there was even vampires until I was 14, a year before my best friends became vampires. I never really figured out why Luke left. I've never got the chance to react until he left. It was the worst birthday ever. This year is going to be different. Did I mention my birthday is on Halloween? Cool right?

"Ash!" I yell walking downstairs.

"Yeah?" He asks appearing at the bottom of the stairs.

"Can you go get my dress for the ball?" I ask him and he nods.

"You coming?" He asks and I shake my head.

"I'm going to just stay here." I tell him turning around walking back to my room. Ever since Luke left 2 years ago I've had this strange feeling someone is constantly watching me. Its a creeping feeling. Its always more constant around my birthday. In someway its peaceful having someone watch over you. Sometimes its just plain out creepy. I put on my shoes and hoodie and I walk downstairs. I grab my keys heading out the door locking it behind me. I walk through the woods to an old graveyard where my mum was buried. I sit down in front of her grave.

"Hey mum." I start hugging my knees "I miss you. Every things changing. The leaves, the air, the weather, my age. It's all so beautiful I wish you were here to see it all. Dad's been acting strange. He always does around my birthday. Ever since the other night when he hit me. Now every time he sees me he runs in the opposite direction. It always starts when I feel someone watching me." I tell her. I sigh looking at the ground.

"As much as I want it to be you watching me I know its not. Well mum its been two whole years. He left me 2 years, 2 minutes, and 30 seconds ago. You know I never told him I loved him. I should've said something when he went to leave. But nope I stayed there like a deer in headlights. I think I've cried so much before in my life." I say

"Well mum I hate to leave but Ash is probably back. I miss and love you so much." I say getting up off the ground wiping my tears away. My mum died the day after my 15th birthday. She was killed by an 'animal'. I don't exactly know what kind of animal killed her. But we other 'animal' do you know that sucks the life out of someone. Oh wait I do. Vampires. I know that's what killed her. My mum was so against me becoming a vampire hunter. She hated violence, she begged me not to start training I didn't listen. I never do.

"Hey where you been?" Ash asks when I walk into the house.

"No where." I say and he gives me as nervous look.

"You were visiting your mum, weren't you?" He asks and I nod slowly.

"Yeah. I like talking to her. She cant scold or yell at me" I reply sitting on the couch.

"I don't scold or yell at you." He tells me sitting beside me.

"I know. I just.. I don't know Ash." I tell him resting my head on his shoulder.

"Well go get ready. We're going to have fun at this ball. Maybe you'll meet your prince charming." He jokes and I roll my eyes.

"I have prince charming. Mason? You remember him?" I ask getting up and he laughs at me.

"He is not your prince charming."

"You don't know that."

"You don't either." He tells me walking up the stairs. I follow close behind ducking into my room. I look at the beautiful dress me and the boys had picked out. I run my hand down the ruffles and smiles. I pull out my mask I sit down on my bed and walk into the bathroom. I look at myself in the mirror, my purple hair hanging loosely from my bun and my hazel eyes. They is no lying I'm not perfect at all. For a long time I thought that was why I thought Luke left. I sigh pushing him out of my head.

3 hours later I was all ready to go. It took longer then a expected to get into this dress, but after 30 minutes I finally got in it without any help from Ash.

"Ash!" I sing song walking down the stairs. He doesn't answer so I walk outside to the porch.

"You look stunning." A voice says from behind me. I jump a little but quickly realize its Michael.

"Michael. I told you not to scare me like that, but thank you." I say turning around.

"Sorry." He says and I giggle.

"It's okay. You look stunning yourself." I say and he smiles at me.

"Thanks."

"Welcome. Now where's Ash?" I ask walking into the house.

"No idea. He started acting weird and then he just disappeared."

"Creepy. But he better be back soon, he's my escort." I say walking into the kitchen.

"I'm back. Wow. Payton you look stunning." Ash says suddenly appearing in the kitchen with us.

"Where were you?" I ask opening a bottle of water.

"No thank you? Wow." He says walking to the sink.

"Where were you?" I ask sternly.

"Somewhere. Don't worry." he says washing his hands.

"Don't worry? All I do is worry about you Ash!" I exclaim and he sighs.

"I was seeing someone I haven't seen in a couple years. He just all of a sudden popped up in town and I wanted to know why." He tells me drying his hands.

"Hey Mrs. Hood. You look stunning." Calum says suddenly appearing beside me. I jump a little causing them to laugh.

"Hello Mr.Hood." I laugh giving him a hug. Calum and I were always being asks if we were related so we decide to say we were married.

"Payton..." Calum sing songs and I looked over at him. "Happy Birthday!!!" He yells engulfing me in a hug.

"Thank you." I laugh hugging him back.

"Your growing up to fast." Michael states and I giggle.

"Oh Ash I forgot to tell you that Mason will not be at the ball."

"That's the 3rd time this week he's blown you off." he states and I frown.

"I know. Don't remind me." I say and he smiles looking down at his watch. "Go get your mask." He says and I nod walking up the stairs.

*Ashton P.O.V*

"Guys you will never guess who is back in town." I say when I hear Payton walk into her room.

"Who?" Calum asks raising an eyebrow

"Luke." I tell them and both their mouths drop open.

"No way." Michael says and I nod.

"That is exactly what I said." I say and Calum shakes his head.

"Why is he back?" Calum ask and I shrug.

"He told me he comes back every birthday shes had since he left." I tell them.

"Did you ask him why he left?"

"He said he left because he was a newborn and he didn't know how to control his self. He didn't wanna hurt her."

"Bull crap! We were all newborns! We all couldn't control ourselves! But we made it through." Calum states and I nod in agreement.

"Why hadn't he come back before now?"

"He didn't say. But there's something else too." I say

"What?"

"He's going to the ball and he's going to tell Payton he's back."
