"How was it?" Katherine asks as soon as I walk in the door.
"Good, I fell off though," I say, not making a big deal out of it.
She whips around from the stove. "Are you ok?"
I shrug, because the pain hasn't started to kick in yet, but I can feel it will.
"What happen?" Katherine inquires concerned.
"I don't really know. I fell off and hit my head, I was bleeding pretty bad."
"Oh, Jesus. Bloody mad you are, riding some feral horse," she mutters to herself.
"Is Dad home?" I ask excitedly.
"No," she replies crestfallen. "Not long now though, only a few more weeks." She says optimistically and places her hands on my shoulders. "Now, you go and have a shower and clean up. Then I'll put something on that cut, it may need stitches." Katherine looks closely at the cut on my head and frowns at it. "Boys dig scars though." She adds mischievously, grinning at me and turning back to the stove to cook our dinner.
I trudge upstairs and into my bedroom, sitting on the edge of the bed and waiting for energy to miraculously come to me. I have a headache and I feel sick, I'm filthy and desperately need a shower only I can't be bothered to move and I slowly feel over come with drowsiness and I let it take over my body.
My mouth is dry and my whole body aches. I roll over and look out the window, it is pitch black and my clock reads 8:30pm. I stumble into my bathroom, get undressed and into the shower, where I let the water wash over me as I close my eyes. I slowly open my eyes and gasp, my whole side is black from a large bruise. I gingerly touch it and pain shoots through my entire side, the bruise goes from the bottom of my shoulder to my knee and it has swollen everything up to about double the size. I finish in the shower, dry off carefully, get dressed in baggy clothes and shuffle downstairs.
I find Katherine in the library, reading a book and sipping a cuppa.
"Ah, you're up." She announces as she hears me walk in. "You were sound asleep, could not wake you. At first I thought you were dead, unfortunately still breathing." She jokes, she looks up and notices the pain that must be on my face. "What's happen now?" She asks dramatically.
I pull my shirt up on the side and show her, she gasps and jumps to her feet.
"Oh my Lord Jesus." She hushes and looks at me sympathetically. "Come on, we'll get some ice for it."
We go into the kitchen and she gets me a bag of ice, she then heats up my soup from dinner and sits beside me, holding the ice to my side while I eat my soup.
"Whose horse was it anyway?" She asks.
"My friend, you wouldn't know him," I reply trying to make it believable.
She grins and raises her eyebrows in suggestion.
"Ew, gross," I say mortified. "He is disgusting in that way."
"I was just kidding," she laughs.
I eat my soup in silence feeling cold because of the ice and awkward because Katherine's hand is close to my boob.
"Any boys at school you like though?" She asks mischievously.
I shrug.
"Oh, come on!" She nudges me in the ribs, causing me an abundance of pain. "Sorry."
"Not really," I say after I recover."They are all dicks and only concerned about their dicks."
"Yeah, most are like that," Katherine says thoughtfully.
"Anyway, relationships are draining. I don't want one at all."
"You've changed your mind I see and you'll change it back."
"Doubt it." Now that Katherine has said it, I never will change back into my old, old ways. Even though Katherine is super nice, approachable, warm and mum-ish. I will never really, truely lose the feeling she is intruding.
I finish my soup and Katherine takes my plate around.
"I can put you to bed, if you need help?" She asks nicely.
"I can probably manage, thanks for the chat. It's been real."
