The last term of year 11 went so quickly, I couldn't believe it when it finished. I managed to pass top of my class in everything while dating a teacher, I even joined a band with Jonathan's sister and her two friends. We wrote our own songs and Triple J gave us some air time, and we played at pubs and small festivals. I play guitar and sometimes the backing vocals. Natalie was surprised when I told her about the band, she didn't think I played an instrument at all. We have gotten quiet a big following and girls want to tour after I finish year 12, I agreed to the offer. Taking a year off to go around the country will be good for me before I decide what I want to do with my life.
I wake up slowly and look around to see Nat's familiar bedroom. I roll out of bed and put on my underwear, stretching and yawning, Nat isn't still asleep like usual. It is Australia Day today, and although it is only 10 in the morning, it is sweltering. I walk down the hall and out into the open space.
"Hey." I say to Nat, tying up my hair as I walk into the kitchen.
"Hey." She closes her laptop and smiles at me, I can't help but feel she is a little distant.
"Do you want a mango?" I ask her looking into the fridge.
"No, I've ate."
I grab a mango and a bowl and sit beside her, she grabs me and kisses me passionately.
"Wow," I murmur after she stops.
"Well, if you are going to parade around in that, I won't be able to help myself."
"I might wear this more often then."
"What are you doing today?" She asks to make conversation, but she looks like her mind is elsewhere.
"Katherine is having an Australian Day party so that we can all listen to the Triple J countdown. She can't get over the band might be in it, I keep having to explain that it won't be."
"Who will be there?"
"The band, Lily, Ellie and Alice. Emma and Carol, of course. Katherine and all of her friends and their kids."
"Lily, Ellie, Alice and you must be so proud. I mean, just imagine, 'The Cartographers - Can't Help' as number 1."
I smile at her. "You're nearly as bad as Katherine, God. We probably won't come in at all, they played our song for about a week and now everyone thinks we will top charts."
"You are really good though."
"You have to say that cause your my girlfriend."
She gives me a small smile and watches me eat my mango.
We sit in silence while I slurp on my mango, Nat looks out pass me through the window, thinking of something complex or at least that is just how it looks. She has been like this the pass few weeks, but today it is more noticeable.
"Ange, I have to tell you something." She grabs the top of my sticky hand.
I feel my stomach swoop and my mind jumps to conclusions. "Ok, can I have a shower first?" I ask nervously.
"Of course." She lets my hand go and I go into the bathroom with my heart racing.
