5 YEARS LATER

"Hi, we're The Cartographers and we're here for 101.9 fm."

Alice and I raise eyebrows at each other, it is our third interview since we arrived in America last night.

"So, The Cartographers, thanks for coming." The too happy, New York interviewer says, smiling at us ferociously.

"Thanks for having us," Lily says politely.

"Anytime, anytime. You have just been here for your second Coachella, and then you left for a week in Europe and now you are back again, how hectic is that?"

Alice sucks in a harsh breath of air, she doesn't cope well in interviews. The New Yorker look at her sharply, but corrects himself so he doesn't appear like he is being rude to an A lister.

"It is strange, but we are used to it now. After four years of this kind of thing, it feels like a habit." Ellie says.

I nod and Alice mutters something under her breath.

"Angelina, you wrote the song that gave the band their big break, was it from your perspective or another person's?"

"No, Winner and Loser was wrote - God, it's so cliché - after a heartbreak." The girls laugh and the interviewer smiles, thinking he is in on the joke. "However, the song is written in sort of two perspectives, the winner and the loser. At the end they both realise that there wasn't a winner or a loser. They learn there are no winners in love, all that content is hidden in metaphors and guitar parts and stuff though."

"Good explanation." Alice says, smiling at me mockingly.

"Thanks Darl," I reply sarcastically.

"Did you ever think that you would get this big? In your first year as a band you came in at number 28 in the Triple J Hottest 100, could you explain what that is for the American viewers?"

The interviewer goes on like this for a while and to wrap up his interview he has us play a game of 'Who is Most Likely.'

"Ok, first question. Who is most likely to ring their parents after a show?"

"Ellie," we all say.

She smiles.

"Who is most likely to miss a gig because they're hungover?"

"Ange," they groan.

"She did once actually," Alice says, laughing.

The interviewer looks at me in shock.

"We weren't that big yet," Lily assures him.

"Most likely to get up early?"

"Alice or Lily," Ellie answers. "Ange is up involuntary with insomnia, so that doesn't really count."

"Definitely Lily," I add.

"Most likely to read a book on a plane then do something on their phone?"

"I think that is Ellie," I say.

"Ellie or you," Lily says.

"Most likely to be a heartbreaker?"

We all laugh.

"Ange and Alice," Ellie and Lily say in unison.

"We are not," we retort.

"Most likely to be married first?"

"Lily." Alice drawls, swinging her Doc Marten foot around in boredom.
