The next chapter is going to be long as hell, just for you guys. Thank you all! Actually, this one's kind of short just to hurry things up, and I had my first high school assessment this Saturday.
_____________________________=Maria's POV=
As we reach the bottom of the stairs, Peggy begins to talk about how good people were saying the movie we are going to watch is. Apparently we were originally supposed to be watching IT, but she couldn't find it on Redbox so she settled for The Dark Tower. We've both already seen it, but it's not a bad movie and I wouldn't mind watching it again. Especially because it's with her. I could never pass up an opportunity to watch something with her; she makes it so worth while, and her company is always appreciated.
I look down at our hands, intertwined together as we walk into the living room. It feels nice to finally feel a true genuine warmth in my hand, instead of that scumbag's. It feels so nice. When we get into the living room where the blankets and pillows are, the sweet scent of caramel corn wafts gently around us. I look into the kitchen to see my mom pouring the popcorn into a plastic bowl for the two of us. Peggy shifts her feet awkwardly and looks down at our hands, coming to the realization that she would have to let go to get the bowl.
I give her a soft smile and her face explodes with a tint of red as she lets go of me. My hand falls limp at my side. What's that all about? We've held hands a million times in the past; we are best friends after all, so I don't know what would get her so flustered. She comes back into the room with the bowl of warmed popcorn, and I break open the bag of skittles for us to enjoy. "Mmh..." I hear her hum slightly, popping a piece of popcorn into her mouth. She gets up to open the movie case with a light snap, when I hear a slight buzzing from the side table to the left of the couch.
"Pegs, your phone." I say, nonchalantly turning on the tv. She picks up the phone, giving a small confused look at it before showing me the phone screen. John's contact was shown on the screen. "That's weird. No one usually calls besides my father..." She says, picking up the phone, "Unless it's an emergency." Picking up the call, she pokes the speaker button so that I can hear it too. "Hey John. You're on speaker." "Are you with someone?" I hear his voice ask excitedly. "Yeah, Maria. So what do you need?" "I need you to come to the hospital on 170 Williams as soon as possible. We have some important news!"
"So important that we have to come all of the way out there?" I chime in (WITH A HAVEN'T YOU PEOPLE EVER HEARD OF CLOSING A GODDAMNED DOOR) sarcastically. "Uh, yes!" "Fine, we're coming." Peggy agreed dejectedly. I have to admit that I was disappointed in missing movie night with her as well. "Okay, see you there." John hangs up the phone before either one of us can get a single word out. "Well, let's get going I guess." I say, getting up from my spot on the pillows and making my way back upstairs.
After the both of us had put on our outer layers again (I let Peggy borrow a pair of my pants because she didn't want to wear her skirt), she walked outside calmly. "Hey mom!" I called just before we exited the house. "Yes Mary?" I liked that nickname, "Peg and I are going to see a friend in the hospital, we might not be back for a while!" "Okay! Be safe sweetie!" And with that, we headed out to my car. "Oh wait!" Peggy exclaimed, scaring the shit out of me for a moment. She bolts back to my house, quickly unlocking the door and flying inside.
What the fuck did she forget this time? I just decide to brush it off and hop into the driver's side of the car, buckling in and turning on the heat. I turn on both of the front seat warmers and pull out my phone to see if I look okay. If I'm going to see Alexander I have to look hot. I'm not sure if he'll care that much after I kind of almost ran him over. Guess I'll just have to deal with the consequences... I apply on extra layer of lip stick, making the red more prominent.
As soon as I snap the cap back on and slip it into my purse, the car door is yanked open by Peggy. Holding the bag of skittles. Why? "Peggy, why the hell did you go back for the bag of skittles?" "I almost killed myself trying to reach them, I'm not waiting any longer to eat them." "I-I... You know what let's just go." So I start up the car and begin to drive to the hospital John told us to go to, occasionally reaching my hand over to take a handful of skittles. By the time we get there it's around 10:00.
I park the car in a visitor's space, unbuckle, and climb out. Peggy brings the skittles with her. "Are you really going to bring those inside?" I ask. She's too much. "I told you, I'm not letting them go to waste. And what if they want some?" "Who said I was sharing? Did you forget that I bought them with my money?" "No, but you should share them. You almost killed Alex, after all..." I sigh in defeat; the argument's not even worth it. "Fine, whatever." She giggles at me and slaps my arm playfully before walking up to the front entrance of the hospital.
"Hey!" I laugh along walking up to the hospital as well. She opens the door for me and we both enter. Peggy grabs my hand loosely and walks up to the receptionist, asking if we can see Alexander. "Sure," the man says, flashing his bright smile at us, "he's in room 180 on the second floor. You have about two hours until visiting hours are over, so make sure to keep track of the time." "Thank you, sir." Peggy thanks him. "Of course ladies. I think he should be released around the 23rd of this month, but be sure to ask later for more details." I nod to him, smiling as well.
"Isn't it weird to see someone who works in such a disaster filled environment smile that brightly?" Peggy asks. "Well, kind of. Maybe he's just a good actor or something." Both of us laugh at the thought for some reason. It wasn't really even funny. "I swear to god we talk about the stupidest shit sometimes." She laughs out. When we walk over to the elevator Peggy looks at me, and I immediately bolt for the staircase. We have this little odd tradition, where if a building has elevators one of us will take the stairs, then we see if the one who took the stairs can make it to the elevator doors before they open. It's stupid, but it's become a common occurrence between us.
As soon as the elevator doors slide open and she steps inside I push into the door in front of me. Taking the stairs three at a time, I bound up to the second floor and burst through the door again. I bet she's not even here yet. When I run around the corner I collide with someone immediately, causing me to stumble backward hold my chest. Fucking Peggy. She's the one I crashed into. "Goddamn it!" I curse. She beat me. Laughing at my failure, she pops another skittle into her mouth and looks at the directory on the wall. I forgot she even had those.
When we find room 180, Peggy looks at me again. Her eyes flicker downwards for a brief moment before she turns the handle and pushes open the room door. Wonder what that's all about. When we walk in, the first thing I notice is Alex crying what looks like tears of joy. He's smiling so widely, hugging John who is scared by the sudden door opening. Hercules and Lafayette are sitting in watching the news, while the other two Schuylers are whispering to each other. Seems like they always do that. "For all of the trouble it took to get here, Alex better be pregnant or something."
John's face goes pink with laughter, Lafayette and Hercules look at me surprised as they snicker, and Eliza chuckles. She sounds upset. Angelica barely cracks a smile before bursting out into laughter with John, and Alex goes red in the face. James Madison giggles. That's the first time I notice him on the other side of Alexander's bed. "James? What're you doing here?" Peggy spits. "Well, I came to share the news, which I'm sure you'll be very pleased with." "Alright, well we came all the way out here to hear it so it better be good."
John flashes an excited smile at Alex and James, rubbing Alex's shoulder before looking back at us. "Thomas got arrested!" He blurts. "WHAT?!" Lafayette shrieks.
