(Roman POV)

I couldn't keep it in the back of my head any longer. I was falling apart at the seams. Any longer and I would burst. I had to allow myself to remember. It was for the best. Once I can get through this I can move on with my life.

*Flashback*

Melissa couldn't make it that night. I sat on top of the hill on the outer area of my kingdom and stared off into the distance. Her sister, who Melissa nicknamed Blue for reasons I can't recall, sat a metre away. The only noise came from the cicadas singing the other creatures to sleep. I was dozing off myself.

Blue was rested as far away as possible. There was tension between us. The events leading up to this night were a blur. I don't recall doing anything to deserve the silent treatment but there was little I could do. She was in one of her little moods.

When she wasn't obsessed with me she loathed me. She was a strange creature. I asked her sister what the matter was with her but all I got in response was "she's been through a lot and she just deals with it differently".

Sitting in nature has always made me think a lot. I was pulled out of my thoughts by a cough from Blue. She was in my head. She was all I could think about. I have known her for years yet I don't even know her real name. I knew little about her. Her favourite bands, activities or even her favourite colour. If I had to guess it would be blue. You know because of her name.

I changed my gaze from the fields of grass to the girl beside me. The hood of her baggy jumper was up. She tried to hide among the fabric. She tugged on the side closest to me trying to mask her face.

"Why do you have to be like this?" I sighed.

She didn't respond. She inched further away. I didn't expect her to respond. She only spoke when it was mandatory. I was told she had been like this for most of her life. I had no idea what her home life was like but her and her sister swore never to talk about it. I took that as a bad sign. What could I do I was just a 12 year old. I couldn't slay whatever was troubling her especially because I didn't know what that was.

She would only ever talk to her Melissa and I but now she's not talking to me. I had a feeling that Melissa called off last minute in hopes that we will make amends. I couldn't see it going that way.

She pulled down the sleeves of her jumper and tugged on hood. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Do I try to closer to her and talk this out? I would only get rejected.

The sun's light was being washed away and replaced with the deep blue of night. She stood up and stared off into the far distance. She was contemplating whether she should stay a little longer. She faced me for the first time that night. Her hood slipped from her head. She put on a smile.

"It was nice seeing you" she lied.

Once she made up her mind she stuck to it, most of the time. I knew she only came to hang out with her sister. When I got the call that Melissa wasn't going to show up she was devastated. I was surprised she didn't leave then. Her persistence to stay here this long was commendable. Part of her would have nagged her to exit as soon as she got the news. Maybe a part of her wanted us to be ... friends again.

The moonlight illuminated her face. She looked different. Her long hair was now cut to a boyish style. Her fringe laid over her right eye. Through her flat-ironed hair, I could see a white bandage. My eyes were drawn down to her hands as she did a slight wave. Her left was bandaged. I approached her and asked about it. She instinctively tugged her sleeve down, pulled up her hood and hushed me. I was offended, I was about to retort back when she covered my mouth and shushed me once again.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Her head was raised upwards, scanning the sky for what was making the buzzing noise. I nodded my head. She drew my sword from my scabbard and approached the sound. This was the bravest I had ever seen her.

"Stay here and whatever you do don't follow me. I know what I am doing," She commanded.

I didn't know how I was meant to feel. Usually Melissa and I protected her. We tried to teach her how to defend herself but she was never interested. Had she become the person we wanted her to be. I am not sure if I like that thought anymore.

Why was she going to do this? I couldn't let her stubble into the creature's grasp. I trailed along behind her. She spun around around once we reached the forest.

"I know what I am doing. You have to trust me."

I should have trusted her

A/N | So I haven't updated in a week. I am slightly surprised I updated today. I've decided I am just going to update how much I want to when I feel like because though all my school work is technically over I have a bunch of transition stuff at school to deal with also I haven't really wanted to write on this story recently.

Most chapter's from now on are going to be published drafts. This means I am just going to write them than upload them. I will most likely be re-reading them until the story is complete.
