My eyes fluttered open.
The feeling of waking from a long sleep lingered over my senses. The first thing I notices when I returned to my senses was him. Him. There, alive as ever. His chest rising and falling with shallow pants. He held me softly in his arms, almost as if I would shatter if pressure was to be applied on me. The yellowness of his eyes brilliant as ever. Uncertainly, I lifted my hand up, to touch him. He was real. This was all real. "Jest." I whispered barely heard. "Jest!" I cried louder, as I threw my arms around him, new fresh tears of pure joy were flowing down my flushed cheeks as I buried my face into his shoulder.
Lifting my face, I met his held his sunshine eyes, glistening like liquid gold. I raised a hand to his perfect face. A tear trickled down his cheek. My finger caught it. He was crying. He had missed me too. He smiled through the haze of our tears, I smiled in return. Then our lips crushed together. Tears slipped out of my eyes from the pure bliss of it. I ran my hands through his soft hair. We sat there lost in each other's eyes. His eyes mesmerizing me into a delirious happiness once more. The silence hung heavy. The rosy red and golden sky caught in time. The treacle well.Oh, how I had missed this, how I had dreamt of it happening again. Wait. Is this a dream, just a hallucination? I pulled away from him.
This couldn't be possible. I saw his murder before my very eyes. The prophecies, the sisters. My mind fumbled to put the pieces together. How can this be? I thought to myself. "Jest, how... how did this happen. It just can't be. You... the axe..." I shook my head. Jest spoke slowly "I'm not sure either, I just saw a flash of blinding light then I found myself standing right here. Or lying down more like." "But how..?" I started jest opened his mouth to speak but the voice speaking was not his. It came from behind me.
"Oh yes, it is VERY possible." A child's voice was speaking. Turning around I found myself looking at a little girl perched on the edge of the treacle well. It was Tillie. She had an innocent smile on her lips but a cold deadness in her eyes. "It's rather simple really." She giggled playfully and swung her feet. "It's just a matter of trade." A similar voice spoke, Elsie who was now walking around the edge of the well without a care. "Trade?" I questioned, doubtful. "Of course!" said a high-pitched voice from my left. Lacie was hanging upside down from her legs on a tree branch. "Ask the mad one" She said pointing at the well. "Oh Oopsie, I forgot! You CAN'T" she started laughing hysterically. I stared bewildered and confused "What?" All three of the sisters all laughed in a shrill high voice. "Jest, what are they talking about?" I turned to him, overwhelmed. He grimaced. He whispered darkly "I-I don't know, Cath" he was interrupted by a chorus of penetrating voices. "He craaacked!" they sang before bursting into fits of laughter again. We exchanged confused and worried glances. "let's just say... Time caught up with Hatta." Tillie said. Suddenly, Lacie appeared hanging from the tree, upside down two inches from my face. The dread filled my body, I knew what she was saying before she said it. The tea shop. The clock. "He went mad." A gasp escaped my lips. Her eyes looked into mine eerily and she grinned from ear to ear. "Where is he?" Jest said. All three girls pointed down into the well. "Ooh don't follow him. You won't find him. He's not coming back. Not EVER" Elsie said, suddenly serious. "What are you saying." I yelled, a little too loud. Tillie leaped onto the soft grass. "I told you it's a matter of trade! How else did Jest come back." Tillie rolled her eyes, "You sillies! He traded himself for Jest!"
