I stood shock still on the high platform, an ocean of people gazing up at me, at the front row were my parents, teary eyes and proud. The air around me was thick and stuffy and my vision swam. The dangling rubies tugged at my earlobes and my tiara, also full of rubies perched perfectly almost too perfectly on my head. The gown was a mass of white velvet, white lace, white net, white ribbon, a splash of claret ruffles, a long white trail, a burgundy rim and a translucent white lace veil. Underneath the veil, I was holding my breath. I was dreading the question. The vicar droned on and on, reciting phrases as I stood clutching my bouquet. The king bounced on his heeled dress shoes. All smiles and shining eyes. He grinned at the watching audience, eager and excited as a child about to receive his birthday presents. I looked away, feeling dizzy. Instead I fixed my eyes downward onto my bouquet, which was full of roses. White roses. Knifes stabbed into my chest. Snow white delicate blossoms, fragrant. Reminiscences come seeping into my body, like blood. Tears prick at the back of my eyes. They brim my eyes and blur my eyesight.
I was weeping.
Behind my veil I was weeping, oblivious to all. Then at that moment I hear the vicar ask the king, "Will you take this woman to be your wife, in sickness and in health, forevermore?" a silent gasp escapes my lips and the reality of it all hits me like a gust of wind. I hear the king mumbling clumsily, "Y-Yes, I do." He squeaks clapping his hands. The vicar turns to me, "And do you my queen take this man to be your husband in sickness and in health?"
My head was spinning. "I'm not the queen." I whispered, to quiet to be heard. No body took notice. Indignation overtook me. The urge to reject him came over me. The word 'no' danced on my tongue willing me to be let out. Out of the corner of my eye, I see my mom, gesturing to me, telling me to say yes, very painfully obviously. My rush of indignation left me. I felt weak, that I had no say in my destiny. This is my fate. I have to say yes. In a tiny voice, I started whispering. "I.." my throat rebelled. I glanced at the king, his eyes glistening. "I..." I started once again. I closed my eyes shut. Below me, I hear a crescendo of gasps ripple through the crowd. The colossal doors burst open. My eyes open.
Lemon yellow eyes pierce my heart. My breath shatters into a million pieces.
It was Jest. Alive.
Time held its breath.

One heartbeat. I'm running. My feet pounding, desperate.
Two heartbeats. My foot slips on the stairs. I'm falling, ground approaching me rapidly.
Three heartbeats. I'm in his arms.
He held me gently yet tight. His arms wrapped around me as if they would never let me go as my body wracked with sobs. I wept into his strong chest, the beating of his heart echoing in my ear, along with mine. I look up, checking if this was all a product of my imagination. I met his tear-filled yet stunningly beautiful eyes. It sent a rush of sheer joy, turning my sobs into ones of utter happiness. I clamped my eyes shut. The sight absorbed into me, replenishing my empty heart. I kept him in my eyes, all I wanted to see was him. Before another second could pass, I felt a cool darkness encasing us.
