My eyes jerk open. My throat was parched, my breath quick. The same dream every night. I still cannot absorb it. Jest. The only light in this dark world. The only hope I had for happiness. Hot tears clouded my eyes again. The image of his severed body crossed my mind and I clamped my eyes shut, as if it will ward the thought away. Tears rolled down my blotchy cheeks. Crying, crying, so much crying. I don't know how else I can cope with it. I have been doing it so much, my eyes are crimson and my throat raw. As if everything inside me has been taken out. Leaving only sorrow and despair. He's gone, and he will never come back. and it is my fault. He launched himself between me and the ax. He sacrificed himself for me.
Jest. Martyr.
Trying not to think about it is impossible. Everything I look at reminds me of him, his dimpled smile, his golden kohl lined eyes. His gentle touch and the way he held me. Every detail is etched into my mind. I gave my heart to him and he gave me his, that will never change.
Looking up, I realized a vine had sprouted up on my bed frame, it had tiny, white, heart shaped leaves. It was beautiful. I gently brushed my finger against one, but as soon as my fingertips brushed the velvety soft heart, it turned to dust between my fingers. I gasped. Then one by one, each and every leaf on the entire vine tuned into ashy dust. My throat tightened. I stood up and walked to my window. It feels like an eternity but only a weekand a half has gone by. I just can't seem to feel alive anymore. I live in a world within myself. I scarcely bring myself to eat. I barely sleep, and if I do I just wake from the horrible nightmare that I have over and over again. Only it isn't a nightmare. Its reality. Everything really happened.
A brush of air hits my face and I hear quiet wing flaps. I jump in alarm, assuming it to be the Jabberwock. But it was only raven. Quiet reliable raven. I let him perch onto my shoulder. I stroke my fingers gently on his jet-black feathers. I looked down outside my window, my trees were planted alongside each other. My lemon tree's branches reached just below my window. I reach my hand out and touch the sunshine yellow fruit, hanging heavy on its boughs. Just like his eyes.
Tears glaze my eyes again. I cannot feel angry or vengeful. Peter is dead. All I can feel is hopelessness. I don't bother wiping the tears that are trickling down my cheeks. Raven cocks his head and takes flight. The heaving feeling of isolation settled upon me once more. Sighing, I buried my face into my deep pillow. I wished I could go deeper and deeper and block out this world of misery. I can't. You can only hide for a certain amount of time. I can't bear to think of the king, or Mary Anne or my parents. Not even my bakery. Slowly, I begin crying myself to sleep.
