Gasping, I sat up on a bed of prickly long grass. I was out of breath. I looked around. Jest was next to me. There were small beads of sweat on his forehead as his chest rose and fell slightly. "The guards... how..?" I stuttered, rubbing my temples as I recalled the past events. "It's nothing, we escaped. That's what matters." He says. I nod slowly. We got away but...
I felt my heart hit rock bottom.
I just threw away my last chance of pleasing my parents again. I truly had made a fool of the king. I ran away from my wedding. I shamed my parents. Now I have no future to return to. "Jest, where are we to go now?" I say. Jest's eyes fall onto the floor. "I don't know Cath."
"Can't we try to return to chess? I mean just because we failed once doesn't mean we can't succeed-"
"Don't you see? We can't!" Jest says meeting my eyes.
"Why not?"
"What are we to trade? I have no time left. All the time I'm occupying is Hatta's time, time that has already been traded."
"Can't I give my time?"
"No! Firstly, your time is too important to give away and secondly your time won't work in this realm." He sighs and looks at me. "There is one way but... NO, I won't do it"
"What is it tell me? I don't mind, as long as we're together anything will be fine."
"No, I will not do it." He shakes his head.
"But then where will we go what are we to do?" I say
"There is no way." Jest mutters quietly.
A cold breeze rustles my hair, shivers crawling down my back.
"But there IS a way." A girl's voice whispers, her voice too close for comfort. Gasping I turn around. Three little girls stand in a row on the edge of the well.
