The wedding hall was in pandemonium. The guests now were out of the seats worrying over my disappearance or criticizing my nerve. The king was in a corner, bobbing his head nervously as several people ushered around him, tutting sympathetically. His bow-tie was crooked and he looked pale as if he was about to faint. My mother was sobbing dramatically, with several ladies crowded around her. Father was out of his mind with worry. They both had apologized profusely to his majesty, for his bride being spirited away again on his wedding day.
The stone tower deposited us in the aisle of the very room that my wedding was to take place in. The crowd scattered like terrified chickens. I felt all eyes on me, either disapproving or judgmental. I was petrified to be in front of the same crowd after what had happened. And this time, standing next to me was Jest. My mother paused sobbing. The king paused bobbing. All heads turned to me. With a shriek, my mother rushed out of the mob of women. "My precious daughter! My darling child!" she gushed. Father's worry melted away, a wash of relief bathed him. Clucking pathetically mother held me in a choking embrace. The king shrank away, he looked petrified. My mother pulled away, smiling wide. Then she turned her eyes to Jest, "That dreadful man, what is he doing here?" the grins on everyone's faces turned to scrutiny. Murmurs rippled through the crowd. I straightened up, anger pumping through my veins. "Mother, this is the man I love!" I say firmly. Gasps resound from the room. My mother's face blanched, her eyes close to popping out. Father stood atop the stairs, not moving a muscle. I seemed to have everyone's attention. I breathed. "This is the man I truly love, and the man I choose to spend my life with. He has not cast any spell on me, he would ever harm me." I continue. Silence rang in the hall. "He isn't a criminal, and he isn't a mere court jester either. He is a rook from the land of chess. Which is on par to the title of a marquess. And not only that, he saved my life from the Jabberwock. And what did his majesty do while the creature terrorized our kingdom? Cover in the corner, eating pastries." I gesture towards the cowering figure. The kings head retreated into his neck like a turtle. "I'm sorry, mother father I will not marry a man that I do not love." I said, my eyes shooting daggers at the king. He squeaked and shrank back, whimpering like a dog. I felt slightly piteous for the man. The crowd lingered in stunned silence. My mother was dumbstruck. For once, words weren't pouring out of her mouth. I dared not turn around. I waited for a response. Fathers eyes hardened, anger brewing inside. Suddenly he snaps, lashing out "NO DAUGHTER OF MINE WILL DO SUCH A THING!" He roared. My heart plummeted down. The crowd split, a clear pathway connected my father and I. His face was bright crimson. He struggled to contain the rage inside him as he stormed down the flight of stairs. He marched towards me, his face molten and livid. "You have disgraced your mother and I. You have shamed the king. I will tolerate no more of this!" He averted his glare to Jest, "This evil man! It is he who has ruined you." He turned towards the guards, "Guards, ARREST THIS CRIMINAL." I felt my strength collapse inward. No, NO! Everything was going well. Panic rushed like a flash-flood through my veins. Hundreds of club and spade courtiers poured down from all directions. Jest's arms wrapped around me protectively. The guards approached us close enough to smell their breath. I shut my eyes. I heard Raven caw twice, followed by a rumbling then blackness.
