I stared at the tiny patterns on my bed sheets, breath barely leaving my throat, which was constricted by overwhelming numbness.
What have I done.
Condemned myself to a life that I dreaded. I felt my lungs aching. I felt dizzy and the room twirled before me. I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed my head into my pillow. I pressed harder and harder and harder till I was near suffocation. A thought flashed across my mind. There's a way. To escape life. To escape my destiny.
Death.
The word sent spiders scuttling down my arms. It echoed in my mind, as tempting as a perfect succulent tart. Then I shuddered. I pictured my mother shrieking and wailing as she saw my dead body. I saw the devastated look on my father's face as he clutched my sobbing mother in his arms. And at once I knew I can't. I won't.
But on the other hand is the king. Royal life. Not touching another pastry oven again. Queens don't bake, they don't do business with lowly servants, I'll never visit Hatta ever again. I gasped out loud jerking upright.
Hatta!
Hatta who held my shoulders when I wracked with sobs over Jest's dead body. But I never once thought about what he was doing or how he was feeling. Who was there for him when he was trying to get over Jest? They were best friends who knew each other for such a long time. And I didn't half a thought to go visit him. Guilt and remorse stabbed me in the gut. I picked up my muslin dress and stood up. Briefly I brushed my hair and smoothed my dress out. I was going out in a muslin day dress and I was the to be queen. Mother would be outraged but lucky for me she and my father are out planning my wedding. But I could care less. I dashed out of the open door as some maids who were still cleaning up from the morning's visit stared after me, too stunned to say a word. I plodded on through the wet grass. Panting and gasping through to the quaint hat shop.
As I reached the shop, out of breath and my dress's trim outlined with a thin layer of dirt and dampness. I knocked the door. There was no answer. Then slowly I pulled the door open and stepped inside. There was not a soul within a hat emporium. The shelves where colorful unique hats and headdresses sat were now filled with emptiness. Some had a stray ribbon or feather sitting all alone. It had an eerie feel to it. My breath was loud and my footsteps echoed in the structure. Hoarsely I called out, "Hatta?"
