"What do you mean?" I ventured, my voice quivering. "We mean what we said." Elsie said. They walked back solemnly to the well. And one by one they jumped in. Tillie was the last one, before the tiny girl plunged into the depths she turned around. "Don't take his sacrifice for granted. He did it so the both of you could be together. You want to be happy, don't you?" she murmured before sliding off the ancient stone edge of the well into the bleak darkness below.

The silence was humid and heavy.

Moments passed. I turned around, I didn't know what to think. Tillie's voice echoed in my head. He did it so Jest and I could be together, but how can that be possible when I am to be the king's bride? How would my mother and father react? A sickly feeling welled at the bottom of my stomach as I recounted all that had happened. "We need to head back." I stated. Jest looked back at me thunderstruck. "Why?" he said pain evident in his voice. "You heard Tillie," I said firmly, trying to sound reassured and strong. "We must go back. Maybe after I explain to them truthfully everything that had happened and who you truly are, they might accept you.... Maybe" I sighed. I knew that is was something of a dream, not reality. They would never forgive Jest for what they just saw, let alone let me marry him. "He wanted us to be together..." I trailed off tears choking my voice again.

I sank to my knees. Jest wrapped his arms around me. I pressed my face into his chest, listening to his beating heart. Jest took a deep breath. "Let's go back." He finally said. I shot up. "What?" I said. "What if.. What if they catch you and they... they..." I didn't want to finish the sentence. Jest lifted my face up. "Don't worry about me," he whispers.

Then from somewhere high in the branches, a speck of pitch black floated down. Raven. He looked less than surprised, yet the joy could be seen in his eyes. Jest didn't look flustered either. It is almost as if they planned this.

"Raven, did you..? You knew he was alive." I asked. He perched onto his usual spot on jests shoulder. He cocked his head at me, as in acknowledgement. Jest stroked is sleek chest feathers.

"He was the first living thing I saw after I woke up" Jest said. Raven began preening himself. I put the pieces together. "So that's where you kept disappearing to..." I was about to ask why he didn't tell me but I didn't want to question him now, we have somewhere to go.

"So, let's head back." Jest said. I nodded my head in agreement.

I wrapped my hands around him as the enormous stone tower closed around us. A look of confidence was on my face but inside, dread was saturating my body.
