The emptiness of my house was starting to get to me the next day. It's been so long since Grace went anywhere for longer than an afternoon that the silence feels foreign. Needing desperately to get away from my memories of the night before I left.
I didn't really have a destination in mind at first. Just driving around to clear my mind felt great, especially without a kid in the car. Since I have the rest of the day without my daughter, now would be the perfect time to get her a gift for starting kindergarten. Something to take her mind off of the change a little bit.
Finding a parking spot at the mall was a little difficult but soon enough I was inside the toy store. I walked straight to the section I knew contained Disney Princess themed toys, since I knew that's what she'd want most.
When I got there I noticed a mountain of a man holding a different doll in each hand with a confused expression. I tried to mind my own business, but it was so hard not to look at him. He had to have been one of the tallest people I'd ever seen in person. His arms bulged out of the black t-shirt he wore. They looked to be all muscle and golden tan. His hair was coal black and cut short, and he had an impressive beard from what I could tell.
After a few more moments of watching him look very overwhelmed I cleared my throat and approached him. When he looked over at me, I felt my knees get weak and I worried that I wouldn't be able to speak.
"Hi, you look a little lost there. I have a daughter so I might be able to help." I offered, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
He smiled at me, causing my heart to beat a little faster. His dark brown eyes looked into my blue ones for a brief second before he looked back to the toys. "I'd really appreciate it. My niece is having a birthday party tomorrow and I have no idea what to get her." His voice was soothingly deep.
I took another step closer to him so I could see what he had in his hands. Standing next to him almost made me jittery, he smelled wonderful. "Well, my daughter absolutely loved this Cinderella make-up kit. Nothing in it stains either which is great." I pointed it out on the shelf. "She would love either of those dolls you're holding. She is obsessed with Cinderella."
"My niece loves Pocahontas. She looks quite a bit like her, so I guess I see why." He smiled again.
"My daughter looks nothing like Cinderella, with her fire red hair." I chuckled.
The man picked a Pocahontas styled baby doll and the Cinderella make-up kit I had suggested. "Thank you for approaching me. I would have probably been in here all day if you hadn't."
"You're welcome. I know how it is. I hope your niece has a great party tomorrow."
"Hey, about that, do you and your daughter want to come? I think I have an invite here somewhere." He felt around his pockets before pulling a folded piece of paper out of his back pocket. He handed it to me after lightly shaking my small hand with his huge one. "I'm Danny, by the way."
"I'm Leah." I told him after he released my hand.
"I've gotta get going, I have a few other places I have to stop. I hope I see you and your daughter tomorrow."
"You probably will. Grace loves making new friends."
He nodded. "So does Sophia." With one last big smile he walked off in the direction of the checkout lanes.
I took a deep breath and laid a hand over my racing heart. Calm down, Leah. There's no way that beautiful man was interested in you, he was just being nice.
Not long after I ordered pizza the headlights of Sam's car lit up the living room. Christine came to the door holding Gracie's hand.
"You could sense that I ordered pizza, didn't you?" I asked, smiling.
