I was a ball of nerves when my doorbell finally rang. Gracie's bouncing excitement for seeing Sophia again wasn't helping matters much. I rushed to the door and opened it quickly, hoping it was Hailey and not Danny. I'm not even close to ready.
Crossing my fingers must have worked for a change. On the other side of the door stood Hailey and Sophia. Sophia was just as excited as Gracie. Hailey was wearing the same tired expression I was.
I stepped back so they could come in. "You're welcome to sit down, if you can find the couch under all the toys, that is."
Hailey smiled. "My living room looks almost identical right now. Sophia has been bouncing off the walls since she got up."
Sophie and Gracie ran to each other and embraced amid the chaos in the living room. I'm so glad Grace found a best friend. I don't know what I would have done without Christine when I was a kid.
"Why don't you show Sophia your room, kiddo?" I asked Gracie. "She can help you pack if you want."
"That sounds great." Grace said before taking Sophie's hand and running up the stairs with her.
I turned to Hailey and took a deep breath. "I can't thank you enough for this."
"It's no problem. They're gonna have a great time."
I nodded. "Any chance you'll tell me what Danny has planned?"
"I've been sworn to secrecy." Hailey said, grinning. "I will give you a hint though, I know how awkward it can be when you don't wear appropriate clothes. You should wear something warm and casual."
"Warm? Where are we going?" I asked before I could stop myself.
Hailey shook her head. "You've squeezed all the information you can from me."
"Well, I thank you for the hint." I said before I heard the girls footsteps coming down the stairs.
After a hug from Gracie I made sure Hailey had my cell phone number and watched them drive off. I went up to my room and picked out an outfit now that I was able to with Hailey's advice.
I showered then got dressed in a green sweater, dark jeans, and black converse. I applied some light makeup and curled my red hair. This is the most effort I've put into my appearance in a while, it felt good.
I went downstairs and cleaned up my living room while I waited. I needed something to do with my hands while time passed or I was going to lose it. It's been years since I was this nervous. I know we said it would be an outing as friends, but it already felt so much like a date.
My doorbell rang again at seven. This time I walked as calmly as possible to the door and opened it. Danny stood on the other side. I was almost surprised by how tall he looked standing at my door. He was dressed warm as well, in a hoodie and jeans. He ginned when he looked at my outfit.
"Hailey tell you where we're going?" He asked.
"She only gave up a hint. Which is good, because I wasn't planning on wearing a sweater."
"I'm glad you did, it looks good on you." Danny said, making my heart flutter.
All I could do was smile in response.
"So you ready to go?" Danny asked.
I nodded before stepping outside, closing the door behind me. After I locked it I followed him to his car. He opened the door for me before getting in the driver's seat.
We pulled up outside an ice rink and parked. Danny looked over at me, I raised my eyebrows at him.
"Have you ever been ice skating?" He asked.
Memories of falling down on the ice with Christine and her family flashed through my head, causing me to smile.
"Once. I wasn't very good." I answered.
"I'll help you." He assured me before getting out of the car to open my door.
After we had our rented skates on Danny helped me out on the mostly deserted ice. My legs were shaking from balancing on the blades.
"You're doing great." Danny said gently.
"We just got out here."
"Which means you've conquered the first challenge. You'll be fine." Danny said as he took my hands.
He started skating backwards while holding onto me.
"How the hell are you managing that?" I asked, shocked.
Danny chuckled. "I played hockey for four years in high school."
"You could literally skate circles around me."
"Probably." Danny replied, smiling. "I'll save my showing off until you get a little more confident."
"Gotta build up my confidence first to tear it down, right?" I asked, smiling at him.
"Exactly." He nodded.
By the time we stopped to go get something to eat, I was doing good. I didn't need Danny's help anymore to glide around on the ice.
After having pizza at an amazing little sports bar I'd never heard of before Danny took me home. He walked me to my front door, his handsome face illuminated in the glow from the light by my door.
"I had a really great time tonight." I told him.
"Me too." He nodded. "Maybe next time we can take Grace."
An uncontrollable smirk took over my lips. "You're getting a little cocky there, aren't ya?"
Danny laughed. "I hope you'll let me take you out again. I'd be pretty disappointed if you turned me down."
"I'll think about it." I told him, not wanting to sound too eager. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I think it's about my bedtime."
"Of course. I'll call you?" Danny asked.
I nodded my head, before getting up on my tiptoes. I placed a kiss on his cheek as best I could.
"Goodnight." I told Danny.
"Goodnight, beautiful." He replied before walking to his car.
I went inside and pulled my phone out of my pocket hitting Christine's speed dial number. I could hardly contain my excitement while the phone rang.
"Hello?" Chris answered.
"I have so much to tell you!"
"Same here." Chris said, I could tell she was smiling.
"Wanna meet up at the park tomorrow after I pick up Gracie?" I asked.
"Sounds like a plan." Christine replied.
