Chapter 55

~*~*Kate’s Point of View*~*~

I opened my eyes and realized the credits were rolling on Risky Business.

“Damn it,” I said, slowly pushing myself into a sitting position. “I missed Tom in his underwear didn’t I?” I looked over at Dave who was sitting in the overstuffed chair on the opposite side of the living room. He was leaning forward, elbows on his knees, hands clasped together, chin resting on his knuckles. He did NOT look happy.

“What?” I asked, rubbing my eyes.

“I talked to Alan,” he said, quietly. “Damn it,” I thought to myself. I was not looking forward to this.

“About the wedding?” I asked, even though I knew that was what he was talking about.

“You called it off?” he asked, sounding far away. “When were you going to tell me?”

“I didn’t call it off, Dave,” I said.

“Yet,” he added for me. I took a deep breath and shrugged. “You were just doing your research?” he said, squinting at me. “Looking into liquidating your trust? Looking to make a break?”

“Dave, I don’t want to fight with you anymore. I just needed to know what my options were, to protect myself. That is why we set it up in the first place,” I tried to explain gently.

“But Alan said you called him this morning,” he said, rather loudly, standing up and starting to pace. “Here I am thinking we are back on track and you’re still plotting your escape!”

“Back on track?” I said. “We had one good day, but nothing’s changed yet! How do I know you’ll keep your promises?”

“Christ, give me a chance to show you, will ya?” he said, “You really don’t know if you want to marry me?” I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, not sure how to answer. “Katelyn…” he said, stepping around the coffee table and kneeling down in front of me. “Please don’t do this,” he begged, taking my left hand in his and running his thumb over my bare ring finger. “I love you, I am sorry, I will changed, I have changed…” I opened my eyes and looked at him.

“I want to believe you, I really, really do,” I whispered. “I’m just scared…”

“I’m scared too!” he said and I could see in his eyes that he was. I reached out and wrapped my arms around his neck.

“Let’s not put anymore pressure on ourselves right now than we need to,” I told him. “The wedding date stands, but we really do need to make some changes, Dave.” He nodded.

“We can fix this, baby,” he whispered, hugging me back. Just then, James’ cries began filter through the baby monitor. Dave stood and pulled me up. “We’ll fix this,” he said again, looking down at me. “I’ll see you upstairs in a little bit; I have to make some quick phone calls, alright?” I nodded and stood on my tip toes and kissed him gently.

By the time I had finished feeding JD and put him back down, Dave had finished he’s phone calls and we met up in our bedroom. I crawled into bed and rested my head on Dave’s chest.

“I hate sleeping without you,” he whispered. “Ever since the first night in New Hampshire when we stayed up all night and talked, I just don’t sleep as well as I do when you’re near me. We belong together, Kate.” My throat felt tight.

“I know we do,” I replied, meaning it. We did belong together, I just hoped he knew what he had to do to make sure things didn’t come between us again. Dave drifted off easily, but I was having a harder time finding sleep. Once I was sure Dave was fast asleep, I crawled out from under his arm and snuck out of the bed room.
