Chapter 63
“Hi Bubba!” I said as Ginny carried JD downstairs after his nap. He rubbed his eyes with his chubby little fist. I had spent the better part of the day with my feet up on the couch, obeying my strict bed rest orders. JD cuddled into me.
“Thanks, Gin,” I said, smiling. She had been an angel these past few weeks. When ever Dave had to leave, she would come and stay with me, helping me with JD, doing some light housework and cooking us meals. I would be lost without her. She has spent the afternoon doing laundry, folding it and was now putting everything away upstairs.
“Do you know who is coming over this weekend?” I whispered to JD. He was having a really hard time waking up and he pouted and made fussy little noises. “Your sisters are coming to spend the weekend with us!” He perked up at this.
“Vee and Hay?” he asked, his eyes wide with excitement.
“Vee and Hay,” I confirmed. He smiled and crawled off the couch and ran to the door. I laughed.
“JD!” I called after him. “They aren’t here yet! They will be here soon.”
“Nooooo! Now!!” he shrieked. I cringed knowing what was coming. He dissolved into a pile of tears on the floor, crabby from his nap. I rose off the couch, awkwardly, and went over to him.
“Oh Bubba,” I cooed, scooping him up in my arms and rocking him back and forth while he wailed. I stood and held him against me, gently rubbing his back, whispering soothingly to him.
“Kate!” Ginny’s sharp voice came from behind me. I turned quickly and realized I was breaking every rule of my bed-rest regime.
“Oh!” I said. “I wasn’t thinking! I heard him crying, my maternal instincts just kicked in…” Ginny frowned and moved towards me, holding out her arms for me to pass her my son. My heart sank and I sighed. “Sorry,” I said, weakly.
“You’d better go sit,” she said. I felt like a scolded child and I wanted to cry like one, too. I turned and slowly made my way back to the couch, biting back tears. I had just wanted to comfort my little boy, who clearly needed his mommy. I heard Ginny in the kitchen, talking to JD, pouring him a cup of juice. He had calmed down and was just sniffling now. He came running back into the living room with his sippy cup and crawled up on the couch next to me. I kissed the top of his head and flipped on the TV to some cartoons to distract us both while we waited for the girls to arrive.
A little over an hour later, I heard the doorbell ring. JD sat up straight and looked at me. I smiled and nodded.
“Vee! Hay!” he cried, running to the door. I’d been sitting for over an hour and was entitled to a short walk, so I again, rose awkwardly and went to greet Jordyn and the girls.
JD had pulled the door open and was busy greeting his sisters.
“Hi girls,” I said with a smile. “Hi Jordyn.”
“Hey, how are you doing?” she asked, leaning in to give me an air kiss on the cheek.
“I’m good, thanks,” I said.
“Thank you so much for taking the girls this weekend,” she said. She had made last minute weekend plans with the guy she’d been dating the past few months and had called earlier to see if Ginny and I would watch them for her. I had agreed instantly. It was hard to believe they were already nine and six, they were getting so big and they were more of a help than a hindrance. “You girls be good and help Kate and Grandma, ok?” The girls nodded and hugged her good-bye.
