Chapter 44

The end of the semester meant one thing: summer was here. And with summer came festival season! The next three months would be filled with traveling and playing huge festivals in North America, South America and then to Europe for the Reading and Leeds festival. I was so glad I’d chosen a profession that gave me summers off.

June and July whipped by and soon, the glamour of touring and the excitement of the festivals began to wear off. We’d arrive in a town Thursday or Friday, depending on which night the Foos were headlining. From then on, Dave and the band would pretty much be busy all weekend long with getting ready for the shows, interviews, meet and greets and after parties. I didn’t mind if Cara or Ali were along for the trip, but more often than not, the girls elected to stay home with their kids. On nice days, I would wander the festival grounds and check out some of the other acts. On rainy days, I’d sit in the hotel room or the trailer with a book or a DVD. At night, Dave was so exhausted, he’d crawl into bed and pass right out.

We were at The Midtown Festival, in Atlanta, Georgia when I was asked to do my first official interview with Dave. I immediately declined.

“No, no, no, no!” I said, shaking my head.

“Kate, you talk to them on the red carpets all the time,” Dave said, laughing. “It’s the same thing.”

                “No, it’s not,” I said.

“Ok, how is it different,” he asked, tilting his head and crossing his arms in front of him.

“One, we’ll be sitting,” I said, counting off on my fingers. “Two, I won’t have on a special dress. Three, there isn’t a 30 second time limit before we have to move on to the next spot. Four…” Dave grabbed my hands and pulled me to him, cracking up.

“Baby, please! It will be nice to share this part of my life with the fans. It will be casual and if you don’t feel like it went well, we will kill the interviewer and burn the tapes.” I sighed.

“Ok…” I said, reluctantly. Forty-five minutes later I was sitting next to Dave in one of the performer’s lounges across from Travis, who was excitedly asking us questions in front of a camera.

“And I just knew…” Dave was saying. “I knew she was the one.”

“What about you, Kate?” Travis asked. “Did you ‘just know’?” I smiled.

“I definitely felt it, too,” I said, looking over at Dave. He reached over and squeezed my knee. “It was hard, though, because it all seemed too good to be true!”

“Now, Dave,” Travis started, “You had mentioned in a previous interview that you guys had to do the whole long distance thing. Was it difficult going from never seeing each other to living together?”

“No, not at all!” Dave said happily. “We were just so happy to finally be together, you know? The only hard part was that Kate had to give up a lot and leave her home.”

“So no bickering about folding laundry or dirty dishes?” Travis joked. We both laughed.

“No, none of that,” I replied. “We actually get along really well.”
