Walk (A Mile In My Shoes)

I am a human being.

I want you to

Know what it's like

When you've been

Turned into a monster

For loving the only

Way you can.

I am a person.

I want you to

Acknowledge the validity

Of my fear when I

Walk down the street

wondering how long

It'll be until someone

screams out I shouldn't

Be allowed to live.

I am alone.

I want you to understand my pain

When I hide in this closet

Because darkness is the only

Friend I can rely on anymore.

Could you walk a mile

In my shoes?

Could you handle the

Hurt that twists within you

Like a nest of squirming

Rattlesnakes?

Just one mile.

Could you handle that?

I am compassionate.

I want you to understand

The worth of my words.

My words can be like

Freshly honed blades,

Sharp, witty, and painful once they bite.

But they can nurture

And mend a broken soul.

I am determined.

I want you to know what I am capable of.

My strength is like a lion that refuses

To accept that my prey can outsmart me;

Resilience at its finest.

I am love.

I want you to know my heart.

My love is like the first sip of

Hot cocoa that only Mama

Can make for you when you're

Feeling miserable.

I want you to walk one mile,

Just one, in my shoes.
