(Elana)

"Boo!" A voice shouts at me from behind my back, startling me. I looked back to see it is my 8th grade friend Opal, and she looked happy despite missing the friend who introduced us; Karmyn. Karmyn had awakened a month or 2 ago, and her awakening came as a shock and it also put her friends that were still at this school to tears as we all knew that now she can't fulfill her promises that we all made about what we would do during college.

I hope just as well as Opal, Angel, Kaitlyn, and I pray she is. Opal and the other 8th graders don't know too much about the Rejection, or none at all at this grade... but I didn't want to worry them even more by telling them what I have been taught.

"Opal! You scared me!" I said to Opal, feeling embarrassed, but then started to laugh with her and the other 2.

I have many friends, these are only a few of them. Many of my other friends are upperclassmen, being either Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors. It's because of a few of those friends that I haven't been bullied that much, and that I am grateful for.

"Well we have to have some fun somehow you know, Elana" Opal said with a chuckle, her light brown hair up in two ponytails again and her silvery-aqua green eyes looking on mischievously. Kaitlyn and Angel chuckle with her to along with me.

The 4 of us have been friends for about a year or 2 now, and we know each other pretty well. We have had countless sleepovers during the summer, and my parents usually allowed it and they were usually full of fun and we stayed up all night watching memes and listened to songs. I missed Karmyn, she would always be the most fun one in the sleepovers.

Opal, Angel, and my other friend Nancy was in my foreign language class, which was the next class I was going to. Nancy and I were both into anime and we always laughing at anime memes and she would sometimes tease me with cringy anime ships. In the end of that however I just laugh, and she does to.

This small group of my underclassmen friends have more surprises for me than my other friends did, and it made me laugh more than irritated me. We talked for a minute before Opal, Angel, and I had to go to Mashu class before we were late and knowing me I hate being late to things.

"You guys seemed to be in quite a rush" Nancy said as she approached us when we entered the classroom. I just shrugged and took my seat, but then I noticed a bunch of college-looking people standing at the sides of the room, just looking at us students and not doing anything. I looked up at the teacher, Mr. Seiko, and he barely acknowledged them at all.

"Mr. Seiko, who are these college-aged people who are standing at the sides of the room..?" I asked the teacher, and this wasn't usual for our classes... the last time this sort of thing happened, someone had awakened.

"They are just college recruiters here for the Juniors and Seniors in this classroom, just ignore them and go as things are normal" Mr. Seiko said in his semi-heavy Japanese accent, and I just nodded at his answer. I couldn't help but have a bad feeling about what was going on here, but there were a few Juniors and 3 Seniors in this Japanese II class... so I guess his words made some sense.

"This is strange, huh?" someone said from next to me, "Right, Elana?"

I looked to my left side and saw the new girl there, Mia Parker. She had wavy dirty blonde hair that went down to the middle of her back, hazel-green eyes, fairly tall for her age, and a flawless clear and glowing face. I've talked to her a few times, and we have been mutual friends for about 3-4 months now; which was when she was still new to this school.

"Yeah, it is. The last time something similar to this happened someone awakened. Do you think that's going to happen sometime today?" I asked her back, and she shrug and sat back on her seat.

"If it was gonna happen, it would most likely be me" Mia said with a smiling sigh, but she seemed sadder of it than happy.

"Why do you think that Mia?"

"I don't think that, I know it. My parents told me that I was related to one of the failed test subjects, I showed a bunch of the early signs in childhood for it, and... well, I just know it's going to happen"

I looked at Mia for a second and then nodded. She was a year older than me, but we were in the same grade because her parents enrolled her in school later than other kids, and despite the chance to move up a grade to where she should be, she always declined it. I didn't know why, but I never asked my thinking it wasn't any of my business.

Soon class started, and we were all speaking Japanese as Mr. Seiko always taught us this way: once class started we were to only speak in Japanese. I also wanted to learn German, but I was advised not to take 2 foreign language classes at the same time, so I would have to wait til I was fluent in Japanese to start learning German or Russian.

Halfway into the period was when things turned a bit strange. Mr. Seiko's phone rang, and he looked at the contact and his face went slightly pale, and I knew this was strange since we all knew Mr. Seiko was barely scared by anything except for getting punished by the government.

"I will be right back in a moment class, keep working on that worksheet I gave you" Mr. Seiko said as he went out the door, and the college-aged recruiters were still just standing there like they have been since the beginning of the period. Even Nancy and the other 2 were starting to see this as a bit strange.

"Maybe it's just a coincidence...?" Angel said, hoping it was just that and nothing else. I was hoping that to.

"Or maybe they are aliens in disguise that come to abduct a few of the kids" Opal said and then chuckled, clearly joking. Aliens were close to what I speculated.

"No... I've seen way too many coincidences in my life to know something isn't quite right here..." I said, and then I kept thinking.

Keep your mouth shut, or your gonna be in even more trouble than you already are, a strange voice said, and it shot me with confusion. I looked over the room, assuming someone had been whispering in my ear but couldn't find any possible culprit. I looked to my left again and saw Mia looking at me worryingly.

"You alright there Elana, you look like you've just seen a ghost" Mia said, and then I nodded and said I was fine.

For the rest of the period the message had repeated in my mind, and I couldn't figure out what it meant. Keep your mouth shut... or be in even more trouble, the words seemed to repeat in my mind as I tried to piece together what that meant and whose voice I heard.

... what trouble was I even involved in to begin with?
