Recap of Chp. 12:

"What is it?" I said, trying to sound casual. I walked out of the bedroom. I was wearing my button up shirt, but I hadn't had a chance to button it yet. She gave me a questioning glance. I simply ruffled my wet hair and repeated my question.

"What is it?"

"Oh. Um... You'll never believe this, but I got a new job offer in Boulder! It starts as soon as we can get back. And I'm pretty sure it's close to where my new house is."

I hadn't seen her house yet, obviously, because I'd spent all my time at my aunt's. She's said it was glorious, as I'd figured as much, because her other house was. And with her family's money... well, I hoped it was nice. "I can't wait to see your house! But what kind of job is it?" I asked.

"It's as secretary job, and it pays... big time!" She said. I could tell she was exited, as was I. "I just have to call..." She glanced at her scribbled paper. "Someone named James L." She said.

And that's the closest I've gotten to knowing your last name, James. But that corporate office was where she'd met you. And the next few months were very... interesting, to say the least. But I'd guess you know all about that.

Chapter 13-

"Wow! That's great! I was hoping we could stay a little longer, you know, to visit... but now you've got a job!" I said as enthusiastically as possible. She knew something was off. Boy, she knew me well.

"What is it?" She leaned up and kissed me softly. "What's bugging you?"

"Um... nothing. Well, you're all I can think about right now." I said quietly. She laughed.

"No, seriously, what's bugging you?"

"Well, you're so quick to accept the job. And we haven't gotten everything settled yet. And, it's just so hectic, trying to get everything fixed and ready, and we aren't married..." Her kiss interrupted my list of problems.

"Do you really need to worry about all of those things?"

"No." I breathed.

"I know you don't. Everything will be settled soon, and you haven't proposed, so that's not a problem, is it?"

"I guess not." Somehow, we'd reached the subject of proposal. Oh, wait, that one was my fault. But she didn't seem to care. She kept listing reasons not to be worried, and soon I couldn't think about any of my foolish problems anymore. She had that affect on me.

She kissed me, and we began with all the packing. It wasn't an easy job, and I just knew it would take us hours. Jill was so interested in every little thing we packed into a box. My pictures, old baseball gloves, an ancient football, even old knickknacks that I'd not seen in years. And she wanted to know the story behind each one of these things. I was flattered, yet confused by this reaction from her. But I tried to shove things in boxes quickly, telling stories at the same time.

We didn't actually have enough boxes for everything, but that was to be expected. We had to get rid of some things, so I was trying to throw away old things in the midst of this mess. My old wallet, my torn t-shirts for garden work, or my jeans that might have been too small; all of these things went into a trash bag.

Jill happened to find my old set of high school pictures. Those brought back memories. That was where I launched into a story. Actually, there were many stories I could tell. Prom... now that was something I could talk about for a long time. I'd gone with a friend, a friend that I will never forget. Nothing serious, just us dancing and talking. And I'd never kissed her. That part ought to have made Jill smile.
