Chapter 15- pt. 2
Yes, within the next month my life would change forever. I went through the normal routines, my new job, my love life, my plans for college (Yes, college).
After all, I was only twenty-five. So, my life was to go on, my whole existence ahead of me. Of course, that existence was settled around Jill. If she had a sick day, so would I; if she wanted a vacation, I'd drop everything to be with her.
I'd finally come to accept the fact that she was always working late, due to that promotion. While she'd originally told me it'd be a few months, it was being extended over and over, and how now dragged out over four months.
Four months may not seem like a long time, but when you're in love as I was, it's an eternity.
"Hey, Bill. How's your morning been?" I asked my boss as I clocked into work. Tyler and Grant were already working on cars, so the garage was buzzing with noise.
"Great." He said, without enthusiasm.
"Doesn't sound like it." I said quietly.
"Yea, well..." He grumbled, walking into his office. "Just get to work."
"Hope everything works out." I said, hoping he'd hear. As I walked by his office to a car, I saw him smile faintly.
And so the day went by normally, as always, and I went home. Jill was working late. Who would have guessed?
Jill came home earlier than usual, but still not as early as I'd like. But, she was in the mood for talking, so as we lay in bed, I asked her a question.
"Do you want to have kids?" I paused. "With me?" Another pause. "Someday?"
She nodded while I was talking. "Why in the world would I have a kid with anyone else? I love you. As if it weren't obvious." She sighed.
"I mean, do you want kids?"
"Well, not now. My career as a designer is just now taking off, and we're not married."
"And, you're still after that promotion." I said.
Her body stiffened next to me, her hands tightening around mine. "Yea." She said.
*Valentine's Day*
As it was, today was Valentine's Day. And, today, I was going to propose to Jill.
Yes, today, I would pop the question. I was planning it all out in my head. I would go to her work on this marvelous Thursday evening, bringing her flowers. Straight up to her office I would go, as I carried her wedding ring in my pocket. And, that ring, had to be the best.
So this morning, I had some shopping to do.
I finally dragged out of bed at around ten. I'd made sure today I had off of work for the occasion.
I went to the most known and loved jeweler in town. I pulled into the parking lot, smiling and carrying myself with pride as I walked inside.
Brent, the son of the owner, was at the counter. "Hey, Aaron." He greeted me. I'd been eyeing a certain ring for a while now, and I was here to make sure.
"Hey, I'm here for a ring." I said.
"Sure, you want that one you were looking at? We've got a great sale price on it today."
"I'd like to see it."
And so, for about a half-hour, I browsed around the shop, trying to find the perfect ring for the perfect woman. And, I found it.
The ring stood out. It had a gold band, diamond laced throughout it. I could even see a heart shaped fold inside it. "I want this one."
It was a little more than I'd hoped, but you can't skimp on jewelry like this, so I bought it, and left the store.
There was nothing that could ruin this day for me. It was the day I would finally make my love for Jill real, they day I would finally propose. After almost two years of love between us, it was finally reaching this stage.
I just hoped she felt the same way.
Around eight, I left the house, hoping to meet her directly as she left the office. At that point I would kneel down and ask her hand in marriage.
I asked which office she was in, and headed to the top floor to see her. As I rounded the corner for the office, I was in absolute bliss.
But what I heard before I opened the door ruined that moment, and possibly my life.
