Chapter One - Bad news, big dog
Sunday
Morgan and Katelyn stood on either side of me as we walked back from the park. It was sunny, not to hot, not to cold either. I held my hands out to the twins before we crossed the road. Morgan looked up at me as she squeezed my hand. Her big brown eyes glazed over with silent tears. She wouldn't tell me what was wrong, I had asked before we left, but she just sat quietly on the sofa. It's never good when a six year old cries and doesn't tell you why. It sort of makes your heart break. What can I say, I'm a sucker for kids.
The three of us had already spent the morning debating whether the "big scary man" - more commonly known as Jay - would beat up the monster under Kate's bed that had stolen her toy rabbit- Mimzy. She loves that film, as soon as she watched it for the first time she "had to have" a bunny called Mimzy. It was a good job it was the twin's birthday a few weeks later. He had said he would beat the monster up and tie him upside down from a tree. Morgan wasn't happy about that, she had said maybe the monster was scared - that's why it was hiding under the bed - and maybe it was lonely - that's why it stole the bunny. Opposite twins, one wants the monster beaten. The other feels sorry for it. Go figure.
That was this morning, Kate wasn't happy with Jay last night, /that/ was funny. He said she was a little girl, granted she is, but she hates it. He also said when she gets older she will wish she was five again. The face she pulled was murderous 'I'm six and three quarters' she said. Arms folded and everything, she looked about ready to kill.
'Can we get ice cream?' Katelyn said as she skipped across the road, dragging Morgan and I with her. I rolled my eyes.
'Kate, honey,' I said as we stopped walking. 'You have three pieces of French toast an hour ago. You can't be hungry already,' I chuckled.
'I'm not hungry,' she said with a grin, 'I just want ice cream.' I sighed.
'Alright, we'll get an ice cream. Then we have to go home, horses, remember?' I said. Kate beamed before jumping up and down.
'Morgan, would you like an ice cream?' I shook her hand a little. Her eyes flickered to my face before going back to the floor.
'I'm alright, thank you,' she whispered. For twins, the only thing Morgan and Katelyn had in common, are their identical looks. Cut curly down hair, big brown eyes little heart shaped faces and creamy colourd skin. Kate was loud and nearly always seemed to be on a sugar rush. Whereas Morgan, well Morgan is just quiet. She doesn't really smile or talk to people. Her mum and dad get worried about her, but I just say she needs time. She's a lot like me when I was younger.
Kate dropped my hand and ran to the ice cream van. I chuckled as she tripped over and stumbled forwards, she didn't hit the floor though which was lucky. A skill she has learnt through years of tripping, I guess. I tugged on Morgan's hand before we walked over to the van.
I brought Kate a vanilla ice cream, with strawberry sauce. The three of us were sitting on a bench in the shade while Kate stuffed the ice cream into her mouth, so fast I'm surprised she even tasted it. 'Sugar monster' I muttered to myself. Morgan still had a fierce grip on my hand; she jumped when I put my hands on her sides and picked her up to put her on my lap. She leant back and rested her head on my shoulder.
