Romulus, Coinin and I were in the Cleo Epifania pack's territory to renew a peace contract between our packs, as well as in the hopes of finding our mate. We were twenty five and being triplets we ruled jointly as the infamous Alphas of the Shadowed Fang pack.
Well, we would once we found our Luna.
While not having a Luna had yet to be a problem, the longer we went without one, the weaker our pack would become. The more power one had, the harder it was to be without their mate; the power would eventually overwhelm them. It was just how werewolves, Alphas and packs worked.
Since our pack's Alphas had a long history of birthing triplets and sharing a Luna, we had a fairly good idea of what to expect based on our genetic and ancestral history.
Considering that we had visited every other pack except this one in search of our mate this pack was our last chance, unless our mate was a rogue, other supernatural being or a human. We would need a strong, kind Luna, both for us and our pack. Our best hope would be for the she-wolf to have a high title. From our research, there were only two unmated females of age in this pack that qualified; the Delta's daughter and the Alphas' niece.
Just as I was thinking this, the most amazing smell reached me, teasing my nose as it beckoned to me. It smelled of old books, freshly baked chocolate cookies, coffee and freshly blooming lilac blossoms after a rainstorm.
Closing my eyes, I inhaled deeply, savoring the rich, decadent smell, holding it in as long as possible, savoring it. I let it unfurl in my lungs, caressing me from the inside, as I attempted to imagine what could possibly smell that good.
Then my eyes flashed open in sudden realization.
Not able to hold my breath any longer, my breath wheezed out of me, as I reluctantly let go of the exotic scent's embrace. Turning to meet my brother's flashing eyes, we all growled as one; "Mate!"
Without another word, we all quickly transformed into our identical pitch black wolves and loped off into the woods. Our feet silently padded through the forest's underbrush as we dashed through fresh rain puddles, the air heavy with residual moisture.
The leaves that crunched underfoot were a riot of color; ranging from a pale lemon yellow to deep crimson. The bushes, heavy with berries, swayed as we rushed past, as if waving to us.
We soon reached what appeared to be a high school.
We should transform back into our human forms, I thought as I eyed the tall, gothic structure thoughtfully. The front door's wood was a deep red, the ancient doorknocker a bronze wolf's head.
Can we hurry? Our mate's in there, Romulus demanded.
Our black forms made their way through the trees, amber eyes glowing in the semi-twilight of the forest. The wind gusted past, playfully ruffling our fur, as the branches overhead swayed, branching waving as if in greeting. The smell of pine, rain and leaves hung heavily in the air like a perfume.
A small white rabbit, startled, looked up, liquid black eyes wide. It stared at us a moment, quivering, its little pink nose twitching. Then, as if awaking from a dream, it shook itself and bolted into some nearby blackberry bushes, leaves trembling in its wake.
Romulus made as if to follow the rabbit, but I nudged him the other way with my snout. Huffing, his tail drooped slightly as he sheepishly pawed at the ground. I nodded towards the animal path, silently telling him to continue.
We continued to run towards in the woods, feet silently padding over the forest debris. Three loud cracks sounded through the air as we transformed back into our human forms.
"Wait," I cried as the other two made to return to the school.
"What," Romulus growled as Coinin paused mid-stride.
"Clothes. We need clothes - we can't just enter a public facility like this. It's generally frowned upon for some reason," I said dryly. I untied the bag of clothes from my leg before tossing Coinin his clothes first. Coinin nodded in thanks while Romulus growled in annoyance before grabbing his from me, clearly impatient.
Dressed, we made our way back to the school. Eager, Romulus slammed the door to the entrance open, heedless of decorum.
Standing with my legs spread shoulder length, head back and dark grey eyes closed, I sniffed for our mate once more.
"This way," I growled, as I gestured straight ahead with a nod my head, indicating the correct direction. Nodding, my brothers followed close behind. I stalked down the halls, occasionally stopping to sniff and make sure I was going the right way.
We ignored everyone around us, sauntering through the halls as if we owned the place. Finally we reached what appeared to be a deserted hall. My brother's looked at me in confusion as they eyed the nearly empty halls that surrounded us.
"This is where she is," I said confidently. My brothers didn't question me as I was the best tracker in our pack.
Coinin quietly opened the door, and we immediately smelled books, old and new. We turned to one another, grinning. That explained the books that we had smelled; she must be an avid reader.
Taking a deep breath, we continued our way into what we now knew was the library, eagerly searching for our mate.
All the way in the back of the vast, gloomy library sat a girl hunched over a massive textbook, quickly writing in tiny script on paper. Occasionally she would pause to push her glasses up her nose, which would soon slip back down her nose.
The rickety table she sat at was blanketed with teetering stacks books. A mass of slightly frizzy chocolate brown curls had been scraped back from her face - or at least, an attempt had been made. Due to her quirky glasses and mass of hair it was difficult to see her features, especially in the shadows.
I exchanged a look with Romulus and Coinin, our expressions varied.
This must have been the girl we were smelling, our mate. Our wolves were going wild with joy, distracting us with their yapping; this was her, our mate.
We had finally found her.
A/N: What do you think will happen next? Who do you think their mate is? How do you think she will react to them?
