Her Story

I've been by her bedside for 3 days now. It was Thursday, June 23. She hasn't moved in five days, and I was unconscious for two of those. I slept on a pull up bed, got food from the food court, but I never left the hospital. I was too anxious. She had the surgery done as soon as I donated the blood and she she came out just fine. We were just waiting for her to wake up. The door opened and I expected it to be the doctor. He was always coming in here to check on her or change the bags on the hanger. "Hey doc-" I stopped as I saw it wasn't him. It was a young looking woman that looked to be in her twenties with chestnut brown hair, bright green eyes, and pale skin. "Oh sorry I didn't know any one else was in here." She said, pausing at the door. "Oh sorry ma'am. You can come in. I've just been in here with her ever since the crash." I said, motioning for her to enter. She walked towards me and pulled up a chair next to me. "Who are you?" She asked, getting a wary look. "Colton Dixon ma'am." I said politely. "Oh you're him? This is my daughter Genevieve Binner. She's a huge fan on you." She said smiling at me. I glanced at Genevieve. 'So she was a fan? There's so much I don't know about her.' I thought, grinning. Then I felt a pang of guilt as I remembered that I hit her with my car. "Ma'am I'm sorry to say that I'm the one that hit her. I'm sorry to put you and your family through so much pain and worry." I said. She paused, then nodded. "It's ok. It wasn't intentional." She said, smiling. I smiled. "I would really like to know her more so I don't seem like a complete stranger when she wakes up." I said, smiling sheepishly. "Why do you want to know more about her? Do you like her?" Genevieve's mother asked me. I felt my cheeks burning and from the big smile on her face I knew she had her answer. "We'll then. For starters you should know that my name is Lisa Schafer." She said, and a very long conversation began. I learned that Genevieve preferred to be called Genna and that she was born on October 18, 1995 (a day before me!). Her parents got divorced and her mom remarried 2 years after. Her dad remarried too, then that woman left after a few years and now we don't know where she is. Two months later he found another girl. He's an idiot who did not graduate high school and likes to bully Genna and her mom. She tried to leave him last year, but returned to give him a second chance. Then the fight happened and then the crash. She always had a hard time in school, always being bullied. Tim - her step dad - likes to say that Hunter Hayes' song "Invisible" was about her because it reminded him so much of her. After about two hours of talking about her, Lisa stood up. "Sorry but I have to leave, I headed over here right after work as you can see." She said, motioning to her blue scrubs. She was a dental assistant. "I haven't been home and I need to see the rest of the family. It was nice meeting you Colton." She said, rising from her chair and heading towards the door. "Nice meeting you too Lisa." I said, smiling at the memory of her insisting that I call her Lisa. "Oh and Colton." She said over her shoulder at the door. "Yes?" I said. "Be good to her." She said, then left. I smiled at the closed door. 'I wonder...' I thought as I gently grabbed Genna's wrist and turned it so I can see it. There on her wrist were faint scars. I kissed them, troubled over the thought that this angel could do such a thing to herself. I set her wrist down and scrunched my nose as a horrible stench invaded my nostrils. I smelled my arm and realized it was me! "Ew." I muttered. I needed to shower and change. I didn't want to leave Genna though. What if she woke up and I wasn't here? It was a chance I had to take, because I don't think she would want to hug a guy that smells like garbage. So I left to change and shower, and to swiftly return to her bedside.
