Evan, so so many times, almost picked up the phone and called Jared. It was hard for him to have a grudge on the boy because a boy like Evan didn't have grudges. He probably didn't even know what a grudge would feel like. He was too caring to have a grudge on his best–his best... friend...? He didn't know what he was to Jared. But Evan knew that Jared was his best friend. Or, sort of. He didn't ever really have a best friend, so what were the requirements?
After an hour and a half, Evan picked up the phone and clicked "Call" on Jared's contact.
Jared was surprised. He immediately picked it up and saw Evan's contact, answering it.
"Hey, Evan. I'm–"
"Please come over," Evan said in a sort of monotone voice. Jared could tell–Evan needed him. And he wasn't quite sure why.
"I will. Give me five minutes, Evan." Jared nodded, hanging up and practically jumping out of his bed. He told his mother and father where he'd be, and drove to Evan's house.
------
The knock on Evan's door scared him. He jumped, quite literally, and got out of bed to answer it. He knew who it was–who else could it be, after all?
He answered it, and there was Jared, who looked up and down Evan.
He looked a mess. His hair was ruffled up‒from pulling it or sobbing so violently into a pillow‒and eyes puffy. He sniffled as he answered the door. He was wearing a huge sweatshirt and some sweatpants. He definitely changed.
But what hurt Jared the most was the heart-wrenching look in his eyes. The boy looked so happy yet distraught to see him. He stood there with his mouth agape, but only the slightest bit.
"I-Jared. I didn't think-you, uh, you really showed up." He spoke, his voice gravelly from all the tears that fell moments before.
"I told you I was coming." He tried to smile and sound reassuring but failed. He just stepped in, quite awkwardly to be exact. Evan shut the door.
"I, uh, um... Hi...?" Evan played with his hands.
"Can I apologize?" Jared looked down, sighing greatly. Evan looked up and stared at the top of Jared's head.
"Sure, I mean, go ahead. But only if you want. Don't do anything if you, don't do it if you don't want to." Evan stepped forward and Jared looked him in the eyes. He studied the soft, glassy look in them before speaking.
"I'm sorry. I'm actually an idiot, and I'm so fucking sorry." He almost started crying, right then and there, but held the tears back and forced himself to look at Evan again. Evan shook his head gently.
"You aren't an idiot, Jare." He said, regretting the nickname. He proceeded to fix himself, apologizing and just saying his actual name a few times.
"I like that nickname," Jared blurted, "Now isn't the time, sorry." He rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
"Oh, no, it's okay. Sorry, do you want anything? Sorry I didn't ask before, that was, that was mean." Evan chuckled nervously.
"We can go to your room if you want." Jared shrugged.
A sharp pain went through Evan's eye, and he nodded rapidly.
"Do you need anything? You're holding your eye again." Jared pointed out and stepped forward.
"Oh, uh, just some medicine. Pain medicine," Evan's voice lowered to a whisper, "Damn virus."
"Alright. Go lay down, Ev." Jared sighed, going to the bathroom to grab the medicine Evan had asked for. Evan did just that, a few tears cascading down his previously damp cheeks. Jared filled one of the Hansen's glasses with water and proceeded to bring the drink and pills to Evan. He walked in to Evan's soft sobs, quickly putting down the water and pills and sitting beside him. He rubbed Evan's back and tried to comfort him the best he could, something he barely did.
He was more than surprised when he was pulled down with Evan, Evan's arms around his stomach and pulling him close as if he were a stuffed animal. Jared's cheeks went the slightest bit red until he relaxed, and kicked off his shoes to put his feet up on the bed.
"You're comfortable," Evan said through his small sobs. Jared chuckled softly.
"I think that you're more important than me as of right now." He smiled, resting his arms on top of Evan's.
"Not really." Evan shrugged.
"Yes, really," Jared nodded, "I have your pills. Do you want those?" When Evan nodded, he broke from their embrace and told him to sit up for a moment, before giving him two pills and his glass of water. Evan swallowed both pills in one swift movement before laying back down and beckoning Jared to do the same.
Soon, it was silent, and Evan and Jared fell asleep next to one another as if nothing had happened at all.
