Chapter 26 - Riff Acoustica

Authors note: I'm sorry that this one is so depressing...I promise it gets happy again soon!!

- Riff Acoustica POV -

I'd watched almost everypony leave one by one - Applejack and Rainbow Dash, Rarity and Spike, Pinkie Pie and Braeburn - and found myself standing alone by the colourful array of cupcakes that Pinkie had provided. I'd also seen several ponies act suspiciously different after drinking one of the brightly coloured drinks that were on the table next to the cupcakes, and made sure to steer clear of them. I'd never really been to a party like this before. Sure, being in a band meant I got invited to a lot of parties with Rock and the rest, but they were never this personal. 

I turned as I heard one of the bands' songs come on. Hearing Rock's voice, and the sound of the rest of the band, made me feel homesick. As I turned, I noticed my sister sitting with Flash. Their heads were close together, but a group of ponies moved in front of them before I could see what was going on.

Feeling protective, I started weaving through the crowd, and before I reached the edge, found myself muzzle to muzzle with Twilight.

"Oh!" I gasped. "Princess!" I bowed my head at her.

She groaned. "Stand up. I dont know how I'm going to be able to keep dealing with this whole formal princess thing." 

"You didnt happen to see what was going on with Novella and Flash over there, did you?"

She paused for a moment, then sighed. "There's no point trying to pretend." She bowed her head, letting her mane fall over her face.

"Hey," I said gently, putting my hoof around her and guiding her out of the crowd. "What's the matter?" We walked out of the door of Sugar Cube Corner and into the crisp night. Once we'd found a bench, we both took a seat.

"I'm breaking off my engagement with Flash!" She blurted out. Her head drooped sadly.

"I-I'm so sorry." I said consolingly. "What was the reason?"

She sighed. "We've been drifting apart for a while now, but seeing him flirting with your sister was what made me decide."

"He was flirting with Novella?!" I felt anger bubble up inside me. If he laid one hand on my baby sister...

"I dont think they really knew what they were doing. They'd been at Pinkie Pie's drinks, and anyone who's been to one of PInkie's parties knows that those drinks are not to be touched." She sighed again.

I reached out one hoof to comfort her. "I'm sure everything will turn out for the best."

She turned and looked at the moon, which hung high in the clear sky. "I really hope so."
