"I cannot go back," announced the elf prince as he walked past his Father.

"Where will you go?" responded Thranduil deeply troubled, although he made no move to stop his son.

"I do not know."

"Go North, find the Dunedain. There is a young Ranger amongst them you should meet. His father, Arathorn, was a good man. His son might grow to be a great one."

Legolas paused, "What is his name?"

"He is known in the wild as Strider. His true name, you must discover for yourself."

Legolas nodded and turned again to leave.

"Legolas" Thranduil called after his son, his voice raw.

"Your mother loved you.

More than anyone.

More than life."

Disclaimer: For the purists - I know that according to Tolkien's (rather than Jackson's) timelines that technically Aragorn is only 10 years old at the end of the Battle of the five Armies, but I think we can all wholeheartedly agree that I am unfortunately NOT Tolkien but for the sake of a good (hopefully) story, let's roll with it! If you really need to, you can pretend Legolas took a sojourn in the forest for 17 years...
