Locked Up Minds Alike

I stood apart from the flowing water, letting it cascade down my skin. I look into the reflection, and didn't recognize myself. My body was shining, every cut that I got in the caves....Gone. It was as if it never happened.

Oh goodie. Clothes that weren't leaves. I let out a heavy sigh and pulled and prodded the leaves around my skin.

The second I was finished trying to make the leaves adapt to my skin, Rina appeared behind me.

"Damn girl." She looked me up and down, making me feel as if I was a goddess myself. I blush as I realize there wasn't much covering my body.

Icel rolls his eyes, suddenly appearing out of nowhere too.

"I knew the heseria would heal you, but I never thought it would do that." As soon as that moment started, it ended. "Where did you come from anyway? Why were you in the caves of no escape?"

I thought for a moment, trying to conjure the memories up. But they just weren't there.

"Hon. It's okay. Your mind is free to roam without the blackouts."

"I can't--"I started.

Icel interrupted me and said to Rina, "She has been in there so long that she locked them up."

"Oh."

"Well then."

"You'll get there. You will just have to find the key to free your mind."

This time I roll my eyes. Sounds so much like deja vu. How the fuck was I supposed to do that?

Icel whispers under his breath, thinking that I couldn't hear him, "What are we going to do about her mortal form?"

"We walk on foot."

"Are you crazy?" He gets louder now, "That's a death wish."

"You should have thought about that before you saved her."

"I couldn't let her die by the hands of something more wicked than the queen." He then adds, "The creature in there could have sucked her soul."

"Well, let's hope we can survive." She trots off, her leaves swishing.

He growls, annoyed, and walks after her.

Well, here we go again. More inevitable death.

I walk after them, noting everything I see and hear. My new body made me feel as if I could do anything, but at the same time I have a lot of doubt. I didn't have any fighting experience, except a few free lessons. What was I going to do about my memories? I don't even know why I was here besides Icel. I think it was best not to ask where we were going.

This place was a beauty, I had to have been dreaming everything. I'm probably dreaming back in the cave of nightmares. I shudder as the wind sweeps through. The sky was filled with sparkling lights, like fireflies in a jar. The trees were a comforting tower over the moist earth under my feet. Leaves were dotted along the path, the trees every color of the spectrum. There was no hard sediment anywhere, whatever created this world thought that it was better off somewhere that wasn't here.

"We sleep and regain our strength at nightfall," Rina called behind her.

Icel stopped with his pouting and came up besides me. We walked for a bit, then out of the blue he says, "Do you remember the queen?"

I struggled, searching for any sort of resemblance. Fuck me. Nothing.

"No."

"We want to kill her. Gut her, then hang her by her intestines. On the palace gates for all her subjects to see. Which, in that case, I don't think they would mind much. They might actually enjoy it as decoration."

I looked into his green eyes and saw nothing but hatred.

"What did she do?"

"Enough."

He thought for a moment, then said, "She created the caves. And many other things that come from your worst nightmares. This world is one of the few places that aren't filled to the rim with monsters."

"Have you been there? To the other...?"

"Yes. You aren't the only one with skeletons in your closet. I don't remember everything either. But that's because I didn't want to conjure up those feelings, those feelings of no return."

He looks at the ground, his features reflecting torment and mourning.

"The only family I had left died. By the hands of her." His hands balled up into fists, and I could feel the tension.

"I'll help you. I owe you my life." I also wouldn't want the same fate to happen to someone else. I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

"You don't even know how to fight."

"You can teach me."

"Teach you? This world won't be around much longer, landscapes are already falling to dust."

"You said there were other worlds..."

"There are, but they are not as forgiving as this world. And from what you've seen so far, there are other world's far worse."

"If it's our only chance at survival..."

He was in thought a few moments before he says, "then you better learn fast. The possibilities of death are right on the edge of your lifeline."
