I stared at the vast, dirt clogged lake in front of me. Dark blue bubbles were at the top, floating on the horrid fluid. Some rising each second. Some popping, and spraying a mist 360 degrees around it. It was like a rhythm, but off sequence. It was the only thing off-kilter in this world. It looked dark, and mysterious, but there was no beauty in it. No resemblance.
I couldn't believe that we would be going through that, it looked thick enough to drown. To suffocate. To squeeze the living hell out of you.
Rina looks so lovely next to it, the comparison making my mind go crazy. Why should someone as beautiful as her have to go through...that? And what if we didn't make it? What if I took part in her death? That I let her go in there, thinking that she had a chance...then she was just...gone? That thought terrified me, crawling deep inside my gut.
"Kyra?" She asks me carefully.
I fall into her arms, wrapping myself tightly around her. She was so damn warm, I could just be here with her forever.
She pulls away slightly, then peers into my face.
"Are you okay, babe?"
I huff, making a puppy face as I reply, "As long as you're okay."
"Hun." She turns fully into me, and puts my hair behind my ear as she says, "We'll be okay. I've swam through worse. The only thing dangerous in that lake there, is your fears. I learned that the only way to truly survive is to snuff out your fears. Take them, crush them. Fight them, drown them."
She raises her eyebrows at me, and we both look at the churning water. If would even call it water.
I snuggle in closer and mumble, "I just want you to be okay."
She pulls away from me, and slips her warm hand into my own. We watch the lake for a fracture of time until Rina looks at me again, and kisses me. This kiss was the same as last time, except that it was also very different.
I was hoping that wasn't a goodbye kiss.
She doesn't give me second thoughts to back out as she tips, and I fall in right behind her.

We waft through the thickness of the lake, pushing away any substances that floated around. It was disgusting, I wished we had face masks at least. I wanted to barf looking at the condition of this place. I could barely see two feet in front of me, good thing that Rina knows where to go. At least she's here with me, it makes it all the while to get through this. As long as it didn't bite me and the ass and get her killed.
Icel should be doing fine with Gemi, and if not, I was going to kick his ass.
She swiftly pulled me along, creating our own current.
Then I felt it. A ripple of water. It disrupted our current, flowing in another direction.
I looked around anxiously, looking for any sign of the threat.
It was nothing, I told myself, I was just being paranoid.
Rina must've felt it too, because she picked up her pace, her glimmering tail swishing through the water.
She was thrown back out of nowhere, her fingers violently shoved out of mine. I had to force myself not to open my mouth and swallow the dangerous water as I held a hand over my mouth to contain my scream.
My breath started to escape me as treaded the water, like a turkey sitting on the table ready for someone to slice me open.
There was nothing as I could do as the thing grabbed ahold of my foot, digging its claws in as it drags me down. Down. Down.
I couldn't scream for help, my lungs no use to me as I sunk further and further down.
It grew darker, the light escaping me as I fought. Kicking, and punching, losing my breath. I knew it was no use to me, but I had to try. I couldn't die like this. Not now, after everything we've been through.
My ears popped, and I almost screamed.
I went limp, my body sinking with the monster. I jerked, my body going rigid for a moment as I fought for air. Black dots formed in my vision, and my eyelids start to close.
I only had a second to look at my attacker, through my slit eyes.
It's body was covered in scales of the darkest black, its tail a barbed spike which would surely kill easily if it used it against anything. It was beautiful...unearthly.
I jerked once more, and was dragged uselessly further down into the depths.
