slight trigger warning toward the end of the chapter

Mitch's POV

I woke up at around 8:00am the next day, the sunshine filtering through my shutters helped bring me round. I rolled over to check my phone, replying to texts from Jerome and my mom and scrolling down twitter for a little while.

I knew everyone was going on a trip to a mini golf course, they were leaving in like an hour. The scary dude, Mr Holmes, had basically assigned me to Piper for the trip because he's noticed a 'slight improvement in her behaviour' since her fight with Molly and he thought it might have had something to do with me. I had no idea honestly, I've known her for as long as I've stayed here, but in a way he was my boss so I wasn't about to question it. Plus I enjoyed spending time with her, I think she was warming up me. Just a little.

Mr Holmes told me yesterday at dinner about the mini golf trip and he told me Piper didn't have to go, he didn't particularly want Piper to come on the trip in the first place anyway so that's probably why he assigned me to her, to keep her out of the way as much as possible. I sat up in my bed with a small stretch and a sigh, I felt sorry for her honestly, she was always pushed to the side. Surely their job was to help her? What good was it to hide her away and not give her any real help?

I shook my head free of the glum thoughts and headed for the shower. I took my time when I got ready, not really in much rush because there was nothing planned for me today. I already had a feeling Piper wouldn't be up for mini golf, she'd probably snap the club in half if she missed too many times. A small grin lifted my mouth as I pulled on my jeans.

When I finished getting ready I shoved my phone, keycard and my wallet in my jean pocket and checked myself in the mirror, I'd left my hair down today, I didn't want to wrestle with the task. I left my room and crossed over to Piper's room at around 9:30, I knocked on the door lightly, not completely sure if she was a morning person or not. When I got no response I shrugged to myself, assuming that she was still asleep.

I leant against the door for a second, pondering my next move, but my stomach let out a huge grumble and made the decision for me.

"Guess I should get something to eat." I shrugged to myself, setting off to look for somewhere to go.

Piper's POV

I wasn't much of a morning person, but after last night's events I woke up early, way too early to get back to sleep. I had a lot of energy within me, but I wasn't sure if it was nervous energy or anger. My head was all over the place, and honestly I was hoping this confusion would give way to anger. I usually hated my anger but I just wanted to feel something that wasn't numbness or disgust.

Soon the energy got too much for me to stay in my room. I slipped on my gym clothes, which I silently thanked myself for packing, and grabbed my phone and earphones. I left at around 8 and and made my way down to the street below. I pressed shuffle on my music and set off at a good pace. A soft acoustic guitar guitar floated through my ear buds as I ran down the beach front.

And every night I feel the same
My girl turns and walks away
Every time I hear her name
It's without her

I cringed internally, my chest tightening at the lyrics. My hand itched to switch the song but I stopped myself, I didn't want her to affect my life so much that I couldn't even listen to a fucking song.
