“Why can’t they love?” She cried out. We had finished our lunch time and we’re in the middle of watching The Lion King.

“They do love you but maybe they have a different way of showing it.” I consoled her.

“Liar! You hate them because you see how upset I am after every phone call! They’re never home and they keep forgetting my birthday! They send me messages on occasions but they never come meet me! What’s the point of being rich if I can’t even meet my parents?” She shouted and cried on my lap.

“ Becky, honestly I don’t know what to say because I don’t know how you feel but I’ll tell you what you said to me. There are people who love you and would do anything to make you smile. You have me, Reed and my parents’. If yours can act like a parent then you can share mine. They already consider you family so why not consider them family? I mean, they hate how Mr. and Mrs. Livingstone treat and would love to adopt you but they can’t. Also, your 18 you can do the hell you want.” I said.

“I know but I can’t help it. They’re my family. Blood is thicker than water.” She mumbled.

“Blood or lineage doesn’t define a family. Love does. If they can’t love you the way you deserve to be loved then don’t deserve being in your life or your love.” I stroked her hair as she cried on my lap.

“I know and the only reason why they’re still with me is because they can’t touch Granny’s inheritance. Granny knew how cold they treated me and Grangran made sure that I inherit everything. The company, her money and all her properties. I don’t know Lave. It’s a lot of responsibility and I’m scared but I hate living like I’m one of their pawns in a game of chess.”

“See? They’re using you. They know they can’t touch the money and everything is in your name especially now that you’re 18. I don’t have a right to say this but I want you to be happy.”

“I know, you’re right. I’ll try one more time. If they can’t accept it then I’m cutting them out of my life. I’ll give them money but other than that there would be no more.” She sat up and wiped her tears.

“I heard someone needs a little cheering up!” A chirpy voice said from the door way.

“Mom! What are you doing here? I thought you had a meeting and will be home later.” I was shocked.

“Well, a little birdy told me that someone needs cheering up.” Dad said behind mom.

“Reed.” I muttered under my breath.

“Hi. I have chocolate cake!” Reed said.

“This is like a family reunion.” Becky said but laughed nonetheless.

“Oh Becky dear. I have designed a new outfit set for you. It’s a belated birthday gift.” Mom ran to her and showed her the design.

“It’s beautiful Mrs. F.” She said solemnly.

“You know you could call us mom and dad too? We’re practically family. I won’t mind.” Mom all but scolded.

“She’d love that Becky.”

“Thanks everyone. You’re more of a family than my own.”

“That is because we are.” Reed piped up.

“Well Mr. and Mrs. F. Mother said that they’d visit in two days time and stay overnight if that’s ok with you.” She asked.

“Well, I can’t say no since knowing her she demanded rather than asking.” Mom replied.

“Yeah.” Was all Becky could say before the talk about her parents was forgotten.

We were having a movie marathon in the theater room and it was already late at night. I yawned and excused myself telling them that I’m tired and want to rest. They said ok but their eyes never left the screen.
