One omniscient day in May, a 26 year old woman was in the Hallmark store at the mall. She was looking for an anniversary card for her husband. It was their first anniversary together. As Katrina was walking out the mall, she saw people running. She was wondering why everyone was hurrying to their cars.
One man that passed her said, "why are you just standing there? The tornado is coming." Katrina said, "I do apologize. I get it. You don't have to be rude." As Katrina got to her car, all the trees were shaking hard and the sky was getting dark. Katrina got in and started the car. As she was pulling out, her car went up. Katrina was looking down and could only see the other people as tiny specs.
Next thing Katrina knew, her car was spinning. Katrina said, "awe, man." Katrina got stuck in the mist of the tornado. She began to think about her life. She knew if she didn't make it out, the Lord wanted her to be with him. Katrina began to think about her and her husband Michael. She thought about when they first met.
Katrina and Michael had met back in middle school. They had dated for a little while. When they were 13, Katrina listened to a rumor and broke up with him. At the same time her parents were having them move. Katrina thought that was going to be the last time she saw Michael. A couple of years later when they were seniors, they came in contact on Facebook.
After a while of them talking, they exchanged Snapchat names and added each other. Over time of them talking, Katrina moved back to Florida. When she moved back, Katrina and Michael got in contact and met up. They chose to go to The Ponderossa in Orange County. Katrina liked going there as a child with her family.
As time went on, Katrina and Michael became a couple. As the months went on, their blossoming romance turned into something even more. They moved in with each other. Over time, 5 years had passed, and Michael proposed. They got married a year later at the beach. They got married May 23. Back in the present day, Katrina started to feel sick as she was spinning.
When Katrina realized it was slowing down, she felt herself drop. She was no longer in her car. Katrina collapsed on the ground. She was unconscious and covered with dust and rocks. A rescue team was out and about looking for survivors. When they found her, her body was numb, but her heart was still beating. They rushed her to the hospital.
Katrina was hospitalized for a month. As Katrina was in the hospital, Michael would be by her side. Since he was a doctor at the hospital, he had full access to her in between his shifts. As the month came to a close, Michael got worried she wasn't going to wake up. When Michael spoke to her doctor, he found out she was still in the coma.
He decided to go on leave from work. He was going to stay by her side and he was going to be there when she woke up. On July 10th at 12:11 am, Katrina opened her eyes. She looked around and saw Michael asleep. She took her hand and felt the side of his face. Michael got up slowly. When he saw Katrina awake, he sat up and leaned over, and gave her a kiss.
After that, he went and got the nurse. When he got to the one at the reception desk, she paged one of the doctors on site. A doctor named Dr. Paul came and spoke to them. When they went back to Katrina's room, he explained her condition was going to be tough. As it turned out Katrina only remembered Michael being her boyfriend. Dr. Paul said, "give her some time. Her memories will come back."
Michael said, "thank you Doctor." When he left the room, Michael explained how she ended up in the hospital. He even told her about their wedding. Katrina was shocked she couldn't even remember what's supposed to be the happiest day of her life. Later on in the day, Katrina was released.
As Michael was driving, Katrina said, "so where are we going?" "I'm taking you home." Katrina said, "where is that?" Michael said, "it's a beautiful glass house on the corner of the road near our former middle school." Katrina started thinking about when she was in middle school. Michael said, "what's wrong sweetie?"
Katrina said, "nothing, I was just thinking back to those times." Michael said, "it sure has been some time." Katrina said, "I remember when I told you I liked you. I was so nervous. I thought you were going to reject me right away." Michael said, "my parents were on the whole no dating policy. I know it was tough at first."
Katrina said, "yeah. I remember how upset Caitlin was when she found out I was with you." "What do you mean?" "She didn't like you. Our friend Taylor told me about how Caitlin was upset you turned her down." Michael said, "it was way before you and me. I can't believe she remembered that." "She remembered and she was trying to get the girls to vote me out of the group.
She wanted me away from the table too." Michael said, "that's crazy." Katrina said, "I know but guess what, I still have you." Michael cracked a smile. He said, "yes and I have you. You are my wife." Suddenly, Katrina twitched and froze up. Katrina said, " I still can't believe we are married." Michael said, "believe it baby. Our anniversary just passed too."
Katrina said, "when was our anniversary?" "It was May 23." Katrina said, "I'm sorry you had to wait for me to wake up." Katrina got silent afterward. Michael watched as Katrina just stared at the window. He was wondering what was going through her mind. When he pulled up to the house, he got out first.
He walked around and came and opened Katrina's door. She said, "thank you." They walked up to the front porch, and Michael took her hand. He said, "sweetie, I wish you didn't have to go through the pain. I'm here and I'm going to be with you." Katrina said, "babe, it wasn't your fault. You should know that. I didn't leave quick enough."
Michael said, "the good news is you are here now. I'm going to love you hard." Katrina said, " it's good I got part of my memories. You know when people come out of a coma they don't remember much of anything. It's almost like try have amnesia." Michael said, "you aren't wrong. I'm glad to have you in my arms."
Katrina said, "I'm happy just being with you." Michael said, "that makes two of us." When they went inside, Katrina saw all these different photos of them and her with family. When they sat down on the couch, Katrina had a memory flash. She saw her and Michael dancing in the living room. Katrina sat back and laid her head on Michael's shoulder. Michael said, "baby, I love you." Katrina sat up and looked at him. "I can tell you love me. For one, you married me, the second way is because you didn't leave me stuck in the hospital."
Michael said, "you are my life and we have a long one to live together." Katrina said, "I have had dreams of being told things like that for a long time." Michael said, "I remember when your friend Latona said you were living in a fairytale land and you were going to fall apart." Katrina said, "yeah, it hurt but I'm glad I made it out."
Michael and Katrina talked until 1 am. They decided to go to bed. When they went to their room, Katrina was laying down wide awake. She couldn't stop thinking about the day's events. She said, "how come I had to be the one to lose some of my memory? I feel weird just knowing I have been married and I don't remember the proposal, the wedding or even our honeymoon."
Michael took her by the hand, and said, "honey I know things seem overwhelming right now. I promise it will get better. We are a team and I am here for you." Katrina said, "it's going to take me some time to get used to it. What about work and do I even have a job?" Michael said, "sweetie, I'm on leave for right now. You are an author and you're a librarian."
Katrina said, "that's fantastic. I love reading and being able to create my own characters." Michael said, "you are quite good at it." They kissed and went to bed. The next morning Katrina got up and went straight into the shower. She stood in the shower and cried for a little while. Michael got up when he heard her crying.
He went to the bathroom door and knocked. He said, "honey are you okay?" She was shocked he was up. She said, "yeah I'm fine. I'll be out in a little bit." When she came out, Michael wrapped his arms around her. He said, "it's okay to cry. You will have those days." Katrina said, "you're right but I still can't figure out why I shouldn't dwell on it."
"You shouldn't dwell on it because you are still living. There may be bumps in the road, but I know you can get through it. I'm going to keep encouraging you every day. You are one of the strongest people I know. Your faith is also pretty spectacular too." Katrina said, "you may be right. I will just have to adjust to this new life."
Michael said, "you can and will. I have already called your boss. They know the situation. She has given you a leave of absence." "I am grateful but at the same time, we both need to work. You can't do it all by yourself." Michael said, "I can manage and you are the one who wants to work. I let you because I know it makes you happy."
"You are too sweet." "I try to be."
