Potions
•~•~•~•~•Double Potions for Y/N has never been more unfortunate. Aside from her quill breaking in the middle of the class, she also forgot to bring a spare, and the fact that she was seated beside Draco Malfoy did not help. Instead, it made the class even more dreadful than it already was. Draco kept shooting her disgusted looks and murderous glares. Maybe it had something to do with her being a metamorphmagi or a halfblood, maybe both.
They have never even had a formal conversation yet but he acted as if Y/N had committed a serious crime, worthy of sending her to Azkaban, the wizard prison. Pulling out her wand, she tried repairing her broken quill without muttering the words since it would break the sound of multiple quills scribbling in complete silence.
Unsuccessful, she gave up her efforts and tucked her wand back into her bag and without any other choice, resorted into using a pen instead. She continued copying the procedures and ingredients with ease, although she did hide the parchment under the table. Ignoring the look that Draco was giving her.
"What do you think you're doing?" Draco asked, making her hair change into a deep blush that matched her face. She hated the fact that she had trouble controlling and hiding her emotions due to her hair.
"I, well —I broke my quill, and I forgot to bring a... spare," Y/N stammered, the matter at hand slowly dawning on her.
Oh no, he's going to tell on me!
She thought, in realization of whom she was talking to.
Of course he is."What on Earth is that?"
"A pen?" She answered as if it was the most obvious thing in the Wizarding world.
Draco, who was oblivious to what a pen really was and where it came from gave a slow but unsure nod. "Where can you get one of those?" Draco pressed on and Y/N suppressed a snort since Snape seemed to be having an intense banter with Professor Karkaroff.
"From a muggle shop," she deadpanned. Watching as the curiousity in his face turn to disgust.
"Should've known, mudbloods like you, always resorting to your ways." he spat, putting an end to the short conversation. Y/N's hair changed into an alarming red color. She was seething with anger and confusion.
When is compromising a bad thing?
But to Draco's surprise, she merely rolled her eyes and decided to let it go. Not wanting to attract any more unwanted attention.
Finishing ahead of time, she put her pen back inside her bag and hoped for the best. A sudden snap made her look up from examining her notes, it was Draco. He broke his quill. The first thing that ran through Y/N's mind was that karma really is real, even in the Wizarding world. Draco's face was priceless, looks like he didn't care to bring a spare as well. The look of hope draining from his face was a sight to see, but Y/N being the soft-hearted Y/H she was, pulled out her pen and tapped it on his shoulder.
"What do you want mudblood? Save the laughs because — " he stopped his agressive whispering as soon as he saw the pen. "You've got to be kidding me Y/L/N?" he asked which she shook her head firmly. Time ticked by and Y/N thought she looked stupid doing this, so she slowly lowered the pen but Draco snatched it from her without another word.
Draco finished his notes just in time, sighing in relief. He didn't know if using muggle-like quills were allowed but he knew he'd get away with it anyway just because it was Snape that they were talking about. He walked up behind Y/N, shoving away the student behind her to get in line.
"Did you really think that you can fool me Ms. Y/L/N?" Snape asked, his tone dangerously low.
"No! Not at all professor, but I broke my quill you see," She pulled out her broken quill for greater measures and showed it to him. "And I just wanted to take down the notes just like you told us to— "
"Is it my fault that you broke your quill?" Snape asked, eyeing her warily.
"No."
"Is it my fault that you forgot to bring a spare?"
"No."
"Is it my fault that you really are just forgetful, stubborn and narrow-minded?"
"No." Luckily Y/N's hair didn't switch colors, because she was again, fuming with rage.
Who did this bloke think he was? She thought to herself scathingly, feeling a sudden surge in her mind as if it were being examined or rummaged through. Vanishing as quick as it came.
"20 points from Y/H/N for saying– no, thinking that way and for using unrequired materials in my class. Now tell me Ms. Y/L/N," Snape trailed as he laid Y/N's parchment on his desk. "Am I still a bloke?"
Unable to bite back her tongue, she agreed. "Yes. Yes you are, sir." She said without any hint of hesitation which made Malfoy snicker.
This girl was something else, he thought.
Just as the words had left her mouth, Snape pointed his wand at her parchment and cited Incendio, making it catch fire. The stunned look Y/N sported made him sneer in triumph. "Now you may leave."
"Gladly." Y/N huffed and turned around to come face-to-face with Malfoy. He held her gaze for a brief moment but she briskly walked out of the room before he could even say anything. His assumptions were correct, Snape wouldn't mind if he had done what Y/N did.
He quickly stumbled out of the classroom to find Y/N just by the door, frantically taking down notes as she surreptitiously glanced inside. Her shoulders slacking told him that the writings on the board were already being erased.
"Here, you can copy my notes," Draco offered before he could even stop himself. She cocked an eyebrow at his newfound kindness and crossed her arms.
"Is this your way of mocking me?" She glared, clearly unsatisfied with how the tables have turned. "Well, I don't accept help from purebloods."
Draco flushed and muttered an apology loud enough for her to hear. Y/N's hard gaze softened, shifting to look at the parchment in his outstretched hand. Her face morphed into an imitation of Draco's face, the only difference was her Y/E/C eyes.
"You've got to be kidding me Malfoy?" she mocked, using his words from a while ago. The look of horror in his face was enough to make her break into laughter. Her imitation of him waning as she lost concentration. Draco could not help but join in, he didn't seem to mind that she was making fun of him at all. "Oh just shut up and take it before I change my mind." he motioned to the scroll as he recovered from his own laughing fit.
She accepted the parchment and broke into a grin as her face went back to normal. Who would've thought that Malfoy's laugh was pleasing to hear when it wasn't laughing about other people's mistakes and flaws?
Definitely not her. Until now.
Draco kept his eyes on hers, absent-mindedly adoring the smile she was wearing which a moment ago was his own.
"Thank you, I swear to return it before dinner but now I really have to get to my next class." Y/N said, pulling him from his daze.
"Uh, yeah — I mean yes of course. You better return it."
"See you around." She bade him goodbye and turned around to leave.
Draco was still looking at her from afar. Watching as Y/N's hair fade into a bright shade of blonde.
