I wake up abruptly, breathing fast and heartbeat high. Sweat covers my face and relief takes over when I realise I'm okay.

I haven't had this nightmare in so long... is it the soft bed that triggered those memories? Or maybe the slight feeling of being taken care of? I can't tell, but right now I really need to take a breather.

I get out of bed and put on my cloak before checking the window. It isn't locked so I open it and climb out. The early morning air feels cold and fresh against my skin, just what I needed. I look around for a good place to sit, then realise I'm a guest here and decide against it. Moving around like that would be suspicious and I really don't mean any harm.

I sit down next to the window and lean against the wall. Without me wanting it, the memories come back. I quickly pull my hood over my eyes since I know my pokerface is going to break. I then hug my knees as if to prepare myself.

"(Y/N)! (Y/N)!"

My eyes flutter open and I see my dad's silhouette in my bedroom door.

"Wake up, you lazy little ass! It's your birthday!" I can't see it but dad's definitely grinning.

I nod at his silhouette and move to get out of bed.

"Make sure to put on that new dress, is what mommy said." Dad adds before closing the door. I change into said dress. It is a white simple dress that ends below my knees. I look in the mirror. My blue hair is shoulder length and it looks great with the white dress. I become excited as I realise I am now six years old.

I run to the living room with a smile. There, mom and dad greet me a 'Happy Birthday!' with a broad smile, as they move out their arms and do jazz hands. It looks funny and I laugh before gasping as I see the cake on the table.

"Yepp, mommy made that for you!" Dad says and lifts me up to spin me around. "I can't believe my lazy ass is six now!"

Dad sets me down and mom slaps him playfully on the shoulder. "I told you to stop calling her that." She shakes her head disapprovingly.

"I already told you I actually mean my little princess, but that sounds so cliché."

"It's fine, mommy." I say with a laugh. Mom still looks disapproving, but she's laughing too. She then puts her hands together in a clap and smiles broadly again.

"It's time to cut the cake!"

I cry, yell and scream at the top of my lungs. My throat hurts terribly, but I stubbornly continue.

"NOOO! LET ME GOO! MOM! DAD!"

"SHUT UP, YOU BRAT!" The man yells back and I feel his kick against my head. I collapse on the ground once again, but my fighting spirit is still strong. I want to run, but the shackles around my wrists and ankles prevent me from doing so. I want to save my parents who are in the burning house, but I am too weak and small to do so. I want to go back in time and prevent these ruffians from ever entering our house, but that's impossible.

I want to do something, but I am unable to.

Earlier, all of us fainted because of some gas these rogues put in our wooden cottage. My dad tried to protect me by putting a cloth before my nose and mouth, but I still fainted. When I came to, I was outside and they were setting the house on fire. They told me that they are getting rid of my parents and that I'm going with them to an auction.

I am so scared. No, terrified and helpless. I can't do anything but look as my mom and dad get burned along with my home.

"YOU BRAT! WHY ARE YOU STILL STRUGGLING!?"

His question doesn't register as I continue to yell and sob, tugging on the shackles to the point where my skin starts to bleed.

"Just knock her out! She'll lose her worth if she continues to bleed!!"

"I've tried, but she keeps struggling!!"

"Then let me show you how it's done!"

A figure approaches me and before I can react, I feel a sharp pain against my temple and everything starts to blur.

~~

My nails dig in my arms as I hug my knees close and bury my face. A lot of time passed since I last confronted my memories, so this is quite the blow. As I recollect the memories of after my parents' death, Obi peeks into the naproom. He's shocked when he sees I'm not there and moves further into the room. He sees my backpack still on the bed and unknowingly releases a sigh of relief.

"She's still here.." He mutters before noticing the open window. His head pokes through the window to look around and then he notices me sitting there.

"Hey miss, what are you do-" He freezes when he realises I'm trembling.

"Miss.. are you okay?"

I don't even hear his question as I'm too caught up in my memories. Obi climbs out of the window and approaches me carefully.

"Miss..." He touches my arm and I flinch, now fully aware of his presence. "What's wrong?" He asks.

I feel stupid for letting him see me like this. I take in a breath and test my voice.

"I.." It comes out weak and broken, so I scrape my voice. "It's nothing. I just had a nightmare."

There is a silence before he speaks again. "Can you look at me?"

I hesitate before lifting my head to look at him. He wears an expression of worry. He scans my face thoroughly and as he does so his eyes become clouded.

"It isn't just a nightmare, is it?"

I bite my lip and look away. That simple gesture is already so different than my usual pokerface, it spoke words to him. I can tell it pains him to see me like this and it confuses me greatly. Why? You have just met me yesterday..

He puts his hand onto my arm again, this time tugging it so I let go of my knees.

"Excuse me." He says before pulling me into a hug. My eyes widen at the sudden movement and warmth. Warmth not only from his hug, but also from my chest. I could feel my eyes welling up and I start sobbing for the first time in years. Why? I have just met him yesterday...
