We needed some days to prepare for the trip. Like, letting Prince Raji know we're coming, finishing up some work and packing our stuff of course. Kiki gave me a sword to carry around. She told me it's the same as what the soldiers use so it's nothing special, but it's good enough for fighting.
I look at Zen and Shirayuki as they're saying their goodbyes. They both look a bit sad, but they're smiling at each other. Zen gives her a pocket watch and she takes it gladly. A slight smile displays on my lips and unknowingly Obi who stands next to me stares at me.
He then raises his arms and puts them behind his neck, the laid back pose. The movement catches my attention and I look at him.
"Aaah" he sighs "I can't believe I'll soon have two beautiful misses for myself." He then winks at me. My face retorts and I push him playfully which makes him laugh.
Zen and the others walk up to us, probably saying their goodbyes.
"Have a good one." Mitsuhide says.
"Have a good journey." Kiki says.
"Take care of yourselves and return safely." Zen adds. They smile proudly and I feel the corners of my lips tuck upwards again.
"Don't worry, master. I'll escort the ladies safely back." Obi says again with a flirty voice.
I was about to push him again, but Shirayuki steps between us with a giggle. I feel a little sting and I dislike it, not just because it hurts but because I know what it is, jealousy and to someone as kind as Shirayuki too.. I really dislike it.
"Then, we're off." Shirayuki says and hooks her arm around mine with a smile. "Goodbye for now. Kiki. Mitsuhide. Zen." I wave with my free hand to them and walk with Shirayuki to the carriage.
"Bye, master." I hear Obi say behind me before he jumps unto his horse. Shirayuki and I sit down and close the doors. The horses start riding and we wave one last time before the carriage turns and we can't see them anymore.
There is moment of silence between us before I voice my thought. "So this is what a royal carriage looks like from inside."
Shirayuki chuckles "Yup and the bench is really comfy, comes in handy when the road is paved with holes."
I look out of the windows and see that lord Haruka who accompanies us until the border rides on his horse next to Shirayuki's window. Obi's riding next to my window. He catches me looking and grins.
~
The sky turns yellow and we're almost at our resting place.
"Shirayuki," her head turns to me. "Are you feeling okay? No nerves to go back to Tanbarun?"
"You're asking because of what happened last time?"
I nod.
"I'm fine." She smiles. "Besides we'll be visiting the places which might be traumatic to you, I should be asking if you're fine."
I shrug. "We'll see about that. Right now, I feel more intrigued about this prince Raji."
She smiles sheepishly "About him, I think I should tell you something."
She then told me about how she ended up in Clarines and I can't help but think about that it's yet another thing that happened because of our peculiar haircolors. I should be used to it by now.
~
"(Y/N)-dono," I hear from behind me. I look up from the dying campfire and see lord Haruka walking up to me. "I feel I should offer an apology for my first judgement of you." He bowed a bit and I am a little in shock. I have felt a bit uncomfortable around him since that happened, but seeing him like this makes me feel even more weird.
"It's okay, lord Haruka. You were only thinking of Zen's safety." I slightly smile at the man. He nods at me as an acknowledgement and then takes his leave. My gaze goes back to the dying fire. We have set up our tents and enjoyed our meal around a campfire. This place had obviously been used before as the campfire-place with trunks the sit on had already been here when we arrived. Everyone has already entered their tents and I'm the last one to stay at the campfire.
"Miss?" I suddenly hear and see Obi moving from his tent. "Why are you still up?"
I shrug. "Just felt like it."
Finally the last flames flutter and it goes out leaving only the ashes with glowing parts left. The warmth is still there, but the sudden light change makes everything black for a moment.
"Have you really been here only watching the fire?"
"Yeah.. it makes me think of stuff and eventually I get dragged along a very long train of thoughts. I used to make campfires like this and me just staring until it goes out would happen a lot." Obi moves to sit next to me on the trunk. "It's always worth it though." I say and point upwards. Our eyes had enough time to adjust to the dark so now we have full view of all the stars sparkling above us.
"Stars, how romantic." He says with a chuckle as he looks up. He then faces me. "Those thoughts.. is it related to your parents..?"
"Correct. Somehow, I keep seeing my house burning in those flames. I don't feel scared or sad whenever I see it, I just feel empty."
"How about now?"
".. what do you mean?"
"All those little flames in the sky. Do you feel empty when you look at them?"
"No, not right now, but I'm pretty sure it's because you are here." The words slip out and I had to doubletake. Did I really just say that? That is just like admitting my feelings or dropping a hint.
He stays silent and keeps his eyes trained on the stars. I look at him through the corners of my eyes. Did that shock him too?
"I think I know what you mean." He then softly says. What? Is that an answer as in I feel the same? Or like 'I know that feeling'?
I want to ask but I suddenly feel all words had left me. I feel.. flustered, happy that he said that.
"Anyway, I'm gonna go back. Good night, miss." He says and moves to his tent.
"Yeah, good night Obi." I say after unfreezing. With a pounding heart I later move to my own tent.
