CHAPTER THREE
Curiosity Killed the Cat

MAE LAY IN her bunk, staring at the ceiling, waiting for Aris. Thomas knew that something wasn't right and both Mae and Aris were going to show him exactly that.

The girl sat up, her feet dangling off the bunk and she turned her head to the door. Mae looked at the light seeping through the gaps of the door frame and tilted her head to the side. She noticed dark shadows under the door, only meaning someone was standing by her room.

Mae quickly, but quietly, jumped off the top bunk and landed on the floor. She grabbed the sheets of the bottom mattress and tore it off. The girl then quietly made her way towards the door and bent down, laying the sheet down in front of the gap.

Just in time, Mae heard light tapping and she immediately knew it was Aris. She collapsed on to the floor and looked into the hatch, bringing her finger up to her lips. Aris looked at her with confusion as he backed away so Mae could follow him inside.

"What's going on?" The boy asked but Mae immediately silenced him by bringing her hand to his mouth. The brunette gave him a look, telling him she'd explain soon. Aris merely nodded and the two continued their way down the vents.

Once the two were far enough from Mae's room, the girl let out a sigh. "There was someone outside my door." The girl informed as Aris still looked puzzled.

Aris' eyebrows furrowed. "What? Why?"

"I don't know." Mae shook her head. "They probably don't trust me or something."

"Why not?"

"Well, I don't know, Aris. Why don't I go ask them?" Mae remarked, looking fed up as Aris sent her an unamused look. "We just have to be extra careful, now." After moments of silence, Mae exhaled and turned to Aris. "Do you know where his room is?"

"Yeah, I'll go get him and meet you there." Aris replied as he took a left turn, while Mae continued to crawl straight.

The girl eventually got to the hatched and looked down it. Mae stayed crouched down, waiting for Aris while keeping her breathing silent. She waited impatiently as she ran her hand through her hair.

"What the hell are we doing?" Mae heard the voice of Thomas ask.

"About time." Mae grumbled under her breath.

Mae turned her head to see Thomas, trailing behind Aris. The brunet then turned to look at Mae and gave her a questioning look, tilting his head to the side.

"Mae?" Thomas questioned, his face scrunching up in confusion.

Mae grinned. "How was your shower?"

Thomas stared at her for a moment before replying, "Uh, cleansing." Mae arched an eyebrow in response.

"Come here." Aris whispered, gesturing for the boy to come closer.

"Watch." Mae urged, pointing down at the hatch. Thomas then glanced between the two strangers, thinking they were some sort of weirdos. It wasn't until Mae slapped him round the head that he snapped back to reality.

"Wha– hey!" Thomas exclaimed, looking at Mae in bewilderment as he rubbed the back of his head.

"Watch." She repeated, her voice more menacing and demanding.
