CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
Something WCKD This Way ComesMAE STARED BLANKLY at the version in front of her, not finding the words to say what she feeling. She couldn't believe what was happening, all she wanted to do was to go back into the Scorch.
The girl didn't know what to feel, she had gotten used to the black room she had been thrown in constantly, but that didn't mean she wanted to be there. The silence between her and the other version of herself was deafening, but Mae couldn't find the words to properly express what she was thinking. Crawlers was one thing, but seeing a doppelgänger of yourself was another.
"What the fuck? What is this?" Mae asked. "Why am I here?"
"Hello, Mae."
Rolling her eyes, Mae licked her lips. "Yeah, you said that already."
"I'm Calista." The girl in white introduced. "I'm sure you have a lot of questions, but let's discuss the basics, I created this inside of your mind and I am here to warn you."
"About what? About who?" Mae snapped. "WCKD? We're away from them now."
"No!" Calista denied. "You will never get away from WCKD, what they want lies inside of your mind and if they get it, then that's the end of the remaining civilisation as we know it."
"Is this about the not so cure cure thing Mary was talking about?" Mae questioned.
Calista pursed her lips before walking around Mae, scanning her from head to toe. "Yes. The mind control that you designed. If they catch you and restore your memories, they'll be able to get what they need for it."
Mae stayed silent, still trying to let the news sink in her mind. Her thoughts suddenly drifted back to the letters she had received and the mention of Thomas. "This isn't just about the mind control is it? You mentioned Thomas in one of your letters, why?"
"Thomas is vital." Calista deadpanned. "Just as important as you. Thomas saved my life– our life and it is important that you do the same."
"You keep saying how important Thomas is, but you don't specify why. And saved our life? How?"
"I can't tell you why, that would put you both at risk. And the dream you had about that little girl and that boy taking you in, that was you and Thomas–"
"Yeah," Mae interrupted. "I kinda figured that out."
"The point is if Thomas hadn't found you, you wouldn't be alive today and though he may have made the wrong choice, he is the reason why you weren't ripped apart by Cranks. He saved you. And all I'm asking is for you to do the same. Keep him safe."
"I'll do my best. But you know how Thomas is."
Calista let out a light laugh. "I do."
Mae shook her head vigorously as she stared at herself, she thought she was going crazy and took a step back, flailing her arms about. "How is this even possible? How are you even inside my head? It doesn't make sense."
Calista grinned. "I'm highly intelligent, Mae. I'm not real. I'm just designed to give us a response to any of your questions."
"Okay, then. What's the secret to the mind control?"
Calista suddenly stood still, her face neutral and her eyes staring into nothing. "I'm sorry. I am not programmed to give you that information."
Mae clenched her jaw. "Ah, you son of a bitch. What do you need to tell me?"
