Kaitlyn

Hayley, Rae and I are sitting in the food court of the open shopping centre along the beach front. We are all sipping on cocktails and chatting mindlessly. Hayley has told us about her magical night in Paris with Niall and how he gave her a promise ring. It sounded so beautiful. I got lost in my imagination for a little bit.

Hayley clears her throat before speaking, “Okay, guys, I want to know one thing that you think only a girl would be able to understand. In return, I’ll tell you something about myself. Kaitlyn, do you want to go first?”

“Sure…” I say hesitantly, “Just let me think of something.”

“Well you could always vent about your relationship with Lucas. Because, sometimes, there are parts in relationships that only girls would understand,” Hayley says comfortingly.

“Okay, well…” I pause for a second thinking and then say, “Well, we were together for what seemed like forever. Like, I don’t really know life without Lucas. I mean, sure, we weren’t always together in the same place, but there was that knowledge of knowing he is out there somewhere, loving me… It’s a different kind of… Um… Oh god, I can’t explain it, but do you know what I mean?”

“Yeah totally. Niall and I were friends before he went to X Factor, and when he left, I knew he was out there and fulfilling his dreams and loving me - as a friend at that stage… well as far as I knew anyway- until his phone calls came less often than normal,” Hayley says and my eyebrows shoot up,  “I mean, it wasn’t always rainbows and unicorns for me and Niall. He went to X Factor, and after a while, we started becoming distant. And before I knew it, things were different between us. I didn’t fully believe it until he was supposed to come to my seventeenth birthday and… he just didn’t show up. His brother, Greg, did and his dad, Bobby, had a reason not to be there.

“Turns out the reason he didn’t come was because he was practicing for X Factor. That was always his thing after a little bit though. He always had excuses as to why he never called me or always had to go early. ‘The lads and I have to practice’, ‘gotta go, practice time, ‘gotta go, shows about to start’. And it was silly of me really. I let it go every time. But, my birthday was the last straw. Because, see, he said he’d never forget about me. But that’s basically what it was like. And I hated it, I absolutely loathed it. So, as I said, my birthday was the last straw.

“I told him to never speak to me again and to erase me from his mind. He was persistent for two weeks after that day, he always called. But I never picked up. He got the message though. It’s funny, he never properly did anything about it until it was too late,” She mused.

“You never know what you have until it’s gone,” I murmur quietly.

Hayley smiles sadly, “Exactly. But then I became the drummer for One Direction. Things still weren’t that peachy, but we managed. Then when I confessed something to Louis and Zayn – which I’ll share with you after you share with me – I didn’t know that Niall was there as well, listening.  He was distraught with himself, and, eventually, we forgave and forgot.”

“I like Niall,” I say and Hayley smiles.

“Same,” She says and Rae and I laugh.

“So, Hayley, tell us how you feel about Lucas and the break up,” Rae says.

I sigh, “I think… I think that when it's all over it just comes back in flashes, you know? It’s like a kaleidoscope of memories. It just all comes back. But he never does. I think part of me knew this would happen as soon as I saw him. It’s not really anything he said, or anything he did, it was the feeling that came along with it. And, crazy thing is, I don't know if I'm ever gonna feel that way again. But I don't know if I should.
