Chapter 25
Standing at the back of the large growing crowd, behind a news van so no-one would notice her, Faye waited for Abby to finish searching for the blue prints of the building; she would get into the building with no-one knowing; at least that was the plan. At the growing number of people gathering around the building it was possible for someone to spot a strange woman dressed in black and figure out who she was, but for the time being, she wasn’t worried and no-one had seen her yet.
She watched the police run around with solemn faces; she could see Colin pacing and looked as if he was barely keeping it together like most of the others around him, some of the officers clung to each other while they cried into each other’s shoulders. Faye longed to go over to him and comfort him like the others were doing, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to explain anything.
She dashed over to the large police van where the techs were focused on facial recognition to those men they had images of. But when Faye glimpsed inside to see if the police had either eyes or ears inside the building, a freeze frame on the screen closest to open door made Faye forget about everything else.
Her phone beeped quietly, but Faye didn’t take her eyes off the image as she fumbled in her pocket. “Have you found anything?” she asked quietly so no-one over heard her.
“I’m ready to guide you in when you’re ready,” Abby replied.
Faye tilted her head up to look at the sky line above the building while she chewed her lip as she considered her next move. “I don’t feel like going in after all,” she muttered with a heavy heart.
“Why, what happened?”
“That young blond woman in the very expensive suite,” Faye replied.
“Do you know her?” Abby asked.
“Sadly, she’s the reason I don’t want to help,” Faye muttered but then sighed when she realised what she had to do and what was waiting for her inside the building. “If anything happens to me, you’re going to have to get my stuff out of Colin’s place for me. I can’t back out now.”
Together they decided that the back entrance would be safer than in front of a load of police and news cameras. Even with less men manning the back of the building, there were a few shadows passing the windows, shadows with guns to make up for the lack of men that could be seen.
Faye kept close to the shadows of the buildings and climbed up the fire escape while she watched the patrolling gun men before slipping silently through an open window.
Once inside the empty corridors, her heart leapt into her throat as she stalked down to the other end of the corridor as she listened to any approaching footsteps, she thought for people who wanted her so badly, there seemed to be very few people looking for her. Even though she couldn’t see anyone, her gut was telling her that something was wrong.
“Abby,” she whispered as she reached a set of stairs leading up another to another floor and down to the ground floor.
“I’m patching in now, it’s going to take some time, the fire walls are really thick but easy to break through. I shouldn’t take too long,” Abby replied.
Faye froze at the sound of shuffling feet and low muttering voices. “Hold up, someone’s coming,” she whispered and darted into a janitor’s closet.
She left the door open a crack as two men strode by. One was tall and skinny while the other was broad and shorter, both were wearing black leather trousers and matching vest with a gun slung over their shoulders and seemed too interested in what they were talking about that to notice any doors slightly open.
