10. The Confrontation
I reached school really early the next day and pondered what to do in my car. No one was even at school since it was still really early, and I didn't want to be the loser sitting alone outside my classroom. I didn't want to stay in the car, though....I decided to go to the library and study a little for my Physics test. Hopefully, the library is open.
Luckily, the library was in fact open. I sat in an isolated corner by myself, spreading my Physics textbook and my notes out on the table. I was just about to start reading over my notes, when someone coughed. I looked up and saw Emma standing beside me. Why was she here so early?
"Hey, Emma! What's up?" I asked, smiling brightly.
"What's up is your trying to steal my man," she said through gritted teeth. Well good morning to you, too, I thought sarcastically to myself. How am I supposed to respond to that? I gave her a confused look and decided to play the oblivious card.
"What are you talking about?" I asked innocently.
"Don't even," Emma said with a weird laugh. "I know you like him and there is no way I will let you ever get him. I've liked him for almost a year now and he's barely even talked to me. I don't even know what he sees in you. You're not that great."
That hurt my ego a little. Just a little. I glared at her.
"What the hell, Emma? I don't have time for this. Will you please let me study for my Physics test?"
She shoved my books away and sat down next to me.
"Listen to me carefully, Mar," she said in a mean voice, "because I won't repeat this again: you stay away from Drew or else I will make your life hell. Understand?"
I was irritated now. "I can do whatever the hell I want, Emma. Now get out my face and let me study!"
"Oh, no, princess. I won't go until you agree to back off of Drew."
"Well, then, you better make yourself comfortable," I said with a fake smile.
She was furious now. "Mariela!" she yelled in frustration.
"Excuse me, ladies, is there a problem?" the librarian asked, looking at us from under her glasses with an irritated look. She stopped typing on her computer and muttered under her breath.
I shook my head and gave her an apologetic smile. She returned to typing on her computer.
"Can we talk about this later?" I whispered to Emma.
"No."
I tried to keep a calm facade. "Emma, if Drew wants to talk to me, I'm not going to ignore him. Got it?"
"Fine, but you will not start the conversation with him today. I bet you he wouldn't even spare you a glance if you wouldn't throw yourself at him."
I snorted in disbelief. What a hypocrite. She was the one who was always wiggling into his conversations and flirting as inconspicuously as possible with him.
"Is that a challenge?" I asked, ready to show her down.
"Yes. The loser never gets to talk to Drew again."
I smiled. That would be very convenient for me.
"Okay, you're on," I said with a smirk.
"Bring it," she replied, giving me a pitying look. She turned around and sauntered out of the library. I rolled my eyes. I do not throw myself at Drew; Emma is delusional.
I was sure Drew would talk to me. Even if he didn't like me, we were pretty good friends. There was no reason for him not to talk to me.
The only problem was that everyone in the class knew Emma liked Drew. People were rooting for her and Drew, but Drew never got influenced by that. Girls from my class would always tell him to ask Emma out, but he always refused to. I used to be one of those girls...
