29. Too Bad I Don't Care
"Did you hear about the latest news?"
"Oh my gosh, what happened?"
"What a bitch!"
"He's such an asshole!
"Still a better love story than Twilight."
"Now she's available for me!"
The last statement came from John, and I was completely and utterly confused by the way he suggestively winked at me as I passed by him. Everyone was whispering about me for sure since they immediately turned to say something into the person beside them's ear as soon as I walked by. Some people stared, others smiled, and quite a few glared.
One one question ran through my mind. Did they know about the bad break-up?
"I hope you're happy now," Emma sneered at me as I walked to my locker. "I knew you and Drew would never work out. You should've just left him for me."
"What are you talking about?" I asked a second too late, playing the oblivious card.
She scoffed. "Yeah, as if. I don't have time for this." She swished her hair over her shoulder and walked away, leaving me alone in the crowded hallway.
Great. I bet everyone knew about what happened.
I turned to walk into homeroom when a familiar voice stopped me in my tracks.
"Hey, Mariela!" I turned around, wondering why the hell Drew sounded so enthusiastic. He looked.... mean. A malicious smirk was on his face, and he had his arm around the girl from the dance.
"Um... hi?" I asked, feeling extremely out of place. Could this get any more awkward?
"Meet my girlfriend," he said, smirking at me.
I blinked.
Well that was fast.
Melanie smiled up at Drew, admiration and joy pouring out of her eyes. To be honest, it was freaking irritating.
"Hey," I said, waving with a smile. "Melanie, right?"
"Right," she said, glancing at me with a bright smile before drooling over Drew again. "And you're Mariela?"
"Yeah. Congratulations. Drew is the sweetest boyfriend ever," I said with a wry smile, turning on my heel to leave. Drew's face was priceless. But even more priceless was Melanie's face.
Drew - 0, Mariela - 1
And now I feel bad. Maybe he was just hurting inside, and I had the wrong reaction....
Maybe I shouldn't have said that....
Oh, screw it. He already hates me.
As soon as I stepped into homeroom, Riya grabbed my arm and basically dragged me outside. "What the hell, Mariela? You break up with Drew and I hear it first from Jenny? Jenny? Of all the bloody people in the world, you decided to confide in Jenny?" Her already loud voice rose to a whole new level. "Why didn't you just call me over the weekend and tell me about it? Come on now!"
I cringed at her tone. Why was she always so loud? "Shh," I hissed, inclining my head subtly at the girls near us. Some stupid freshmen girls were eagerly waiting for her to say some more. Why are freshmen girls always so conspicuously nosy?
"I didn't want to bother you. You were all happy with Jason so I didn't want you to come down from your high." I paused after some of Riya's words finally sunk in. "How the hell did Jenny find out?" I almost yelled.
