7. The Musical
(Mariela's POV)
What to wear? What to wear? Every article of clothing I had was spread across my bed. Music was blaring loudly in the background and I was dancing while freaking out at the same time. Multi-tasking for the win. Finally, I chose a light blue dress with a light brown belt. I chose out some flats and grabbed a sling. I straightened my hair since it was puffing up and put on some earrings. Ready to go, I turned off the music and lights. I called Riya for some last minute moral support.
"Hey hey, Mar! What's up?" I could barely hear Riya's voice. There was so much yelling and laughter in the background.
"Just about to leave for the musical. You sound like you're having fun."
"I am! No! Don't attack me! Not the hair! Not the hair!!!" Dang it. Riya was too busy to talk.
"Well, wish me luck, buddy!"
"Good luck, Mariela! You'll be fine! Drew will be all over you by the end of tonight!"
"I really hope so!" That would be amazing.
"I know so. You got this. Oh and -- HEY! Can't you see I'm talking here!!?"
Suddenly someone else was talking to me."Hello?"
"Um.. hi," I responded, not sure who I was talking to.
"You'll be fine! Don't worry, girl!"
"Thanks..." Who was I talking to??
"Seema! Give me my phone back!" I heard Riya shout in the background.
"Hello? Hey, Mar, sorry about that. I'm gonna go some place quiet. People are taking advantage of me." Riya laughed. "I'm covered in so much color right now and I am dripping wet!"
I laughed. "I wish I were there. Holi seems like so much fun."
"Next year, buddy. Next year."
"RIYA!" I heard someone yell in the background. "GET OFF THE PHONE!"
"Oh, crap!" Riya exclaimed. I could tell she was running. "Well, I've got to go now, Mariela! Have fun!"
The phone was suddenly disconnected. I grinned and shook my head while I walked downstairs.
"Mom!" I shouted. "It's time to go! Where are you?"
My mom walked out of her bedroom. "Okay, okay. I'm ready. Let's go."
I sighed. "When is my car going to be fixed?"
"The guy said you can get your car by tomorrow afternoon," my mom said. "I don't know why it's taking him so much time to fix."
We drove to my old school. I waved good-bye to my mom and called Allen as soon as she drove away.
"Allen! Are you almost here?" I asked as soon as he picked up.
"Yeah, I'm in Drew's car right now and Drew says we'll be there in approximately 2 minutes."
"Okay, see ya then," I said.
"Bye!"
I hung up and waited at the front of the school. Where were they? Suddenly, someone covered my eyes from behind.
"Guess who?" the voice asked in a lower octave than usual.
"Drew, I know it's you," I said, grinning. I turned around and saw Drew grinning.
