4. The Day at the Amusement Park

The week flew by, and I was surprised to note that it was Friday already.

I ate my lunch quickly, and Riya and I went to the upstairs restroom in the theater building  since no one ever went in there.

"It's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday! Everybody's looking forward to the weekend. Partying part---"

"Please stop," I begged Riya. "You're not a bad singer but even you can't make that sound good..."

"Whatevs."

Suddenly her phone beeped. I shook my head, pretending to be disappointed.

"Texting during school, Riya? Tsk tsk."

"It was your phone, stupid. Can't you recognize your ringtone?" She put her head in her hands, obviously depressed at my momentary stupidity.

I checked my phone. "Oh, hey. Allen's inviting us over to his house this weekend. He's inviting me, you, and...guess who?"

Riya pretended to think, even tapping her chin. This is what happens when you take Theater with Mr. Arnold: over-acting.

"My intuitions are telling me that it might be Drew."

I rolled my eyes. "Chill with the theatrics. Please tell me you can go! I want to see Drew, but I need my best friend with me! I need moral support."

"I'll be there. What time? And when will it end?"

"He said to come over around at 9 in the morning so that we won't have to wait in all the lines at the amusement part."

She thought it over. "9 am?? Ugh, fine, I must really love you."

I cheered and gave her a big hug. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!!"

She smiled indulgently. "I am such a good friend honestly."

I woke up the next morning to the sound of my blaring alarm clock at 7:30. I got ready, ran downstairs, grabbed a banana, and jumped into my car to drive to Allen's house.

"Mariela!" Allen walked over to me as soon as I got out of the car. He gave me a warm hug then stepped back and pretended to be upset. "You're ten minutes late."

He grinned at my annoyed facial expression. "Come on in. Everyone's already here."

Drew and Riya were sitting next to each other, debating enthusiastically over something stupid when Allen interrupted them. They looked up and greeted me, both wearing sheepish smiles on their face once they realized how loudly they had been talking.

"Let's go to my room now that everyone's here," Allen suggested. He beckoned for us to follow him up to his room. As soon as we entered his room, all of us plopped down on his bed.

"So did anybody notice that Allen's relationship status on Facebook changed from 'in a relationship' to 'single' last night?" Riya asked, looking only at Allen.

"What?" Drew seemed as shocked as I did.

"Oh." Allen shrugged. "Yeah, I broke up with Maria."

"Why?" I asked, confused and kind of hurt that he didn't tell me about this himself. We usually shared everything with each other.

"She got super clingy and thought I was cheating on her..."

Drew laughed disbelievingly. "Are you kidding me? She doesn't even go to our school! Who would she think you were cheating on her with?"
