17. A Change of Plans
I parked my car on Mason's street and got out of the car, putting my sunglasses on. Could this week get any better? It was like a Drew overload. A girl couldn't get any luckier than this.
I walked up to the door, tripping over the uneven ledge (as usual) and falling straight into the house as someone picked that exact moment to open the door.
"Woah, woah! Mariela?"
I snapped my head up as I caught myself like a ninja on the doormat. Mason was standing with his arms out, ready to help me, but I didn't need it because of my ninja-like skills.
"Hey, Mason," I said, smiling sheepishly. It seemed like every time we met, I tripped over something or the other. I'm not even clumsy so I don't know how or why that always happens.
He smiled at me warmly. "Mariela, please don't ever change," he said sincerely, guiding me to his living room.
There were like a hundred people in the room! Mason had said it would be a "small get together." I looked at Mason accusingly, and he shrugged carelessly.
I rolled my eyes and scanned the room to find a famliiar face as Mason walked over to the door to greet some more people that were walking in.
"Hey, Mariela!" a voice exclaimed from behind me. I turned around and flashed Bella a bright smile.
"Bella! I haven't seen you in forever!" I exclaimed, pulling her into a hug.
She pulled out of the hug and gave me a mock accusatory look. "I know! We need to catch up!"
I nodded and gave her a conspirational grin. "Mason told me you have a boyfriend," I said, wiggling my eyebrows.
Her eyes widened in surprised and then narrowed into slits. "I am going to kill him! I don't have a boyfriend!" She paused and grinned. "Yet." As soon as she said that, though, she frowned like she said the wrong thing.
I raised my eyebrows. "Do I know him?"
She nodded and looked embarrassed.
"What!? Why didn't you tell me! I would've gotten you two together!" I said, surpised and a little hurt that she hadn't told me about her latest crush.
"Well... Mason told me that the guy I'm crushing on is crushing on you," she said, looking embarrassed.
"Who?" I asked confusedly.
"Um... it's Allen," she said, snapping her head up to scrutinize my face.
I laughed and rolled my eyes. "Allen? How do you know Allen?"
Allen seemed to know every girl that lived in this town, a fact which I found hilarious for some reason.
"We met at this club, and I mentioned you since he told me that he went to St. Mark's Episcopal." She seemed relieved that I wasn't angry at all.
"How did you know he was crushing on me?" I asked curiously.
"He said so," Bella said, frowning slightly.
Her answer left me beyond confused, but rather than dwelling on that, I decided to enlighten my friend.
"Well, he's not crushing on me anymore so go for him," I said, smiling reassuringly at her. She brightened up instanly and pumped her fist in the air. I laughed because her reaction reminded me of my crazy best friend.
Oh, crap.
Riya liked Allen! Why did I tell Bella to go for him!? I mentally slapped myself and wondered how to get Bella to stop plotting her way to trap Allen.
