25. Detention is...Fun?
"Allen, I hate you," I groaned, stopping outside the detention room with a scowl on my face. I'd only gotten detention three times before and I'd gotten all of them during freshman year. Once you got detention, the teachers started to treat you differently and I didn't want to go under the "bad kid" category.
"Hey, I make your life interesting. Plus, it's just detention, Mar. Get over it. It's not like it's your fist time in here," he said, making me shake my head at him.
"Yeah, thanks for reminding me," I said sarcastically.
He half-smiled. "No problem. Shall we?" He opened the door for me and I unwillingly went inside. No one in there was my friend except for I guess Mark. Detention was filled with the rebels, the popular guys, and the pranksters today. Not exactly my cup of coffee.
"Ay! Mariela!" Mark exclaimed, waving me over. "Since when have you been a bad girl?"
I rolled my eyes. "Shut up, Mark."
"I'm guessing Allen got you in trouble," he teased, reaching out to bump Allen's fist as a greeting.
"You guessed correctly. We got caught ditching."
Mark raised an eyebrow and gave me a cocky smile. "You were ditching at school?" I nodded. "That hardly counts. Hang out with me and we'll have more fun ditching somewhere else." His words sounded slightly double-meaningish and I couldn't help but laugh at the look on his face.
"Hey now. I'm loads of fun to be around," Allen cut in, his ego hurt. He looked personally offended by the idea of him being less fun than Mark.
"Whatever," I said, sitting down at a desk. "So when does the teacher usually come in? Or does he not come in at all?"
"Well, we usually bribe him to leave, but some days he refuses to go. It all just depends on his mood, really," Mark said wisely, sounding very experienced. The thought made me smile.
"Yeah, but sometimes you can bribe him into letting you leave, too, if he doesn't want to leave so it's all good," Allen added, making my smile grow even wider. Clearly, I was friends with the right people.
Before I could say anything, the teacher stumbled in, holding a Starbucks in his hand. His hair was slightly disheveled and he looked slightly out of place in his tie and suit.
"Sit down," he commanded.
Everyone slowly got into their seats, not looking too afraid of him.
Damon, one of the populars and a huge prankster in my class, raised his hand. He looked bored but cool at the same time in his Ray Bans. He was going for the nerd look today and damn, if nerds look like this, I want some more nerds to go here!
And I have a boyfriend.
"Yes, Damon?" the teacher asked, looking wary.
"I have a proposal for you, Mr. Lave," he said slowly, looking serious and sexy, but that's beside the point.
Mr. Lave raised his eyebrows and placed his Starbucks on his table. I sensed that he was up for some bribery today. "I'm listening," Mr. Lave replied.
"Well, how about you get a nice gift for your wife since it is almost Valentine's Day?"
"How nice are we talking?" Mr. Lave asked, appraising Damon.
"I was thinking about 5 bucks," Damon said, causing everyone to bust out laughing. I tried to hold back the laughter, but the serious look on Damon's face pushed me over the edge and I started to laugh.
