Moving-in day. I had just arrived at my new home in beautiful northern New York. It was a large three story house with a large plot of land surrounding it. I was arranging my new room, and had just about finished. All I had left to do was make the bed with the new sheets I had just bought. The sheets were a calming blue color, the color of the sky on a clear day. It was refreshing to look at something so calming. I finished making the bed, and fell backward onto the comfy sheets. Maybe a new start was just what I needed in my life, and this move was just the thing to make all the pieces of my life to fall together.
"Cassie?" My mother's voice echoes through the large house.
"Yes mom?" I yell back to her.
"Can you come here please?" I sigh and sit up off of my comfy bed. I make my way to the top of the stairs, where my mother is standing.
"Cassie, are you all done moving into your new room?" She looks up at me, after setting down a few boxes.
"Yeah, I just finished before you called up to me."
"Oh, good. Do you think you could carry these couple boxes up into the attic and clean out anything that might have been left up there?" I sigh but smile and nod my head. She has a complex look on her face, but I'm not paying enough attention to properly interpret the emotion she was displaying.
"Sure thing, I don't think I have anything else to do." I pick up the first box and walk back down the hallway to the hatch into the attic. I pull down the ladder and carefully make my way up the rungs with the box held shakily in my hands. I set my foot on the flooring in the attic, and search around for a light. I find one on the wall behind me and I flick the switch on. I look up and the box drops out of my hands. There's a deep blue chest, with a broken lock sitting in the middle of the room. I look at the chest, nervously debating if I should approach it or not. It is so mysterious and creepy at the same time, but I have a deep pulling feeling in my chest, like something in the chest is calling to me. I walk around the dropped box and make my way to the chest. I look around the rest of the expansive attic and wonder why this chest is situated in the very middle of the room with nothing else around it. It almost seems like this chest wasn't here until I got here. I kneel down in front of it and feel the surface. The chest is warm to the touch. I take the broken lock off and brace my hands under the lid to lift it. I slowly lift the lid a peek cautiously inside. I gasp and throw the top back. There's hundreds of softball sized glass balls with names on them. I pick two up and look at them in astonishment. I set the one in my left hand down and read the name of the one in my right hand. "Clara". I really am completely baffled. What are these? I set the Clara glass ball down beside me and pull more out of the box, slowly reading each name. I pick up a glass ball and it suddenly starts glowing. I jump backwards, and drop the ball in the process. The glass ball shatters and the light becomes blinding. I cover my eyes and I hear a slight popping noise, and as soon as the light came, it was gone. I slowly uncover my eyes, but cover my mouth to hold in a scream instead. There's a person standing in front of me.
"Cassie, are you alright, I thought I heard something crash." I stare at the boy standing in front of me and stand there speechless. " Cassie?" He looks at me expectantly, and I swallow hard.
"Yeah mom I just dropped a vase, I'll clean it up I promise." I don't take my eyes off him, I'm still not completely sure that he's real.
"Okay, as long as you're not hurt." I look deeper at the boy and gape. He's on the tall side and his eyes are beyond captivating. He's mysterious and alluring at the same time. The fear in my expression is of the equal to the intrigue in his.
"Cassie? That's a nice name. Is it short for anything?" I stare at him wide-eyed. He seems all too comfortable in our exchange.
"Cassandra." I stutter out eventually. I feel like I might faint any second. I can't find any possible, or logical explanation for what I just saw.
"So Cassie, can you tell me what year it is?" I tilt my head in confusion and open my mouth in shock. I search his face, hoping it's a joke but he's not kidding.
"It's 2018." This time, he gapes at me, but he also seems to be gauging my reaction.
"You're serious?" I nod my head, rendered speechless. "Cassie, I must stress that you do not get scared. I won't hurt you. I promise." I nod at him warily and he moves behind me. He lifts up the ladder and traps us in the attic. I shake my head and regain my voice.
"Wait, what are you doing? Why would you trap me up here?" He puts a finger to his lips and I snap my mouth shut.
"Cassie, It's imperative that you listen to me and trust me." I nod at him again, seeming that I have once again lost my voice. " My name is Sam, and I need your help."
"Help, from me? What could you possibly need my help with?" He gives me a desperate look.
"If we don't work together, many people could die." I openly gape at him.
