"You can't be serious. You just appeared from a glass ball. This can't be real, I must be dreaming. I have to be dreaming. Am I having a fever dream?" What is going on? I suddenly stop and process what he just said. "People could die?" I look at him, starting to shake.
"Whoa, I need you to calm down." He puts his hands up and moves towards me. I shrink away from him as he puts his hands on my shoulders. "Cassie, if you help me and were successful, no one will die." He moves his hands from my shoulders to the sides of my face. He cups my cheeks and looks into my eyes. I feel a wave a calm wash over me and I start to feel myself melt into his touch. His eyes are so beautiful. I close my eyes and just enjoy the feeling of his hands on my face, calming me down. I open my eyes and look at him.
"How did you do that? I feel fine now." He pulls his hands away and smiles. An odd sense of bliss has fallen over me and I am not able to process my own voice screaming in my head.
"It's a little secret that I'll save for later." Alarm flares as he smirks and turns to walk to the chest. He looks at the remaining glass balls and runs his hands over them gently. I walk over to him and stand behind him. He picks up one and looks at it sadly.
"Sam, what are all of these?" I kneel down beside him and put my hand on his shoulder. He turns to me. Something about the sadness in his eyes sobered me quickly.
"I'm not too sure that you're ready to know yet." I look at him quizzically. That's not really an answer that I was hoping to hear. It's not much of an answer at all.
"Sam, if I'm going to help you save the world or something, I think I have the right to know what the hell these glass balls really are, and why you appeared out of one when it shattered." He sits down on the floor and pulls me down next to him. I cross my legs and prepare myself for his explanation.
"Well Cassie, if you really must know, I think it might be easier to show you." He smiles softly and reaches for my hands. I pull them back out of his reach. If I know anything it's to not trust a stranger. I look at his hands skeptically. He pulls them back slightly.
"Show me? What do you mean?" He leans towards me, an unreadable expression on his face.
"If you can trust me. Just give me your hands, I can make you understand everything." He extends his hands again, and begins to frown when I refuse to take them again. Why does he expect me to just trust him five minutes after meeting him?
"Listen here. You just appeared from a glass ball and you probably have magical powers. How do you even expect me to begin to trust you?" I scoot back away from him and he sighs.
"You're right. You have no reasons to trust me. But if we want to live, and you want to help me, this is a vital piece of our journey." I raise my eyebrows. Everything seems to be life and death with this guy. Why can't he just say that he's my soul mate and that hes going to take me away from normal life and let me live an amazing life with him? But no, if we don't take this vital journey and we succeed then we will both live. What is even going on? I rub a hand over my eyes, making sure that they're still working correctly.
"Alright so I don't trust you, but I'm also interested in what you have to show me. So show me what you have, and the I'll make my decision if I want to trust you or not." He sighed as I moved back towards him.
"I guess that's the best you're going to give me right now. I'll take it." He stretches out his hands waiting for mine. I move my hands slowly into his. This whole situation is completely surreal. I place my hands into his and the lights around us flicker a couple of times and then go out completely. The air becomes hot and swirls around us in a tornado formation. I look around in wonder as the dust stirred up by the little tornado beings to glow and then I gasp as my clothes begin to glow and change. Sam grips my hands tighter as if saying ' Don't let go.'. I keep a strong grip on his hands and watch my plain t-shirt and jeans change into a metallic gold dress and knee high gladiator sandals. I feel like a goddess. My hair grows and turns silky black and a gold beaded head dress appears on my head. As I look around the beads hit against each other and make tiny chiming sounds. As the tornado begins to wane, I see the new scenery around me.
I look at Sam and gasp. He's a beautiful bronze colored tan, and he's wearing a gold satin wrap skirt with heavy gold beads around his neck. His once sleek black hair is now a curly black mass of hair, pulled back into a low ponytail. His face is painted with silver and gold makeup. He's barefoot and there's a spear lying on the ground next to him. I look away from him and marvel at the room around me. It was someone's bedroom, with a massive king sized bed, surrounded with sheer curtains blowing in the wind. The ceilings are high and the room is massive. A large vanity and display of clothes cover one of the walls. The vanity is covered in various types of paint, gold and silver and small containers cover the surface.
Sam's grip lightens up and I pull my hands out of his as I stand and look around the massive room. I look down at my gold dress and my tanned legs. I hold out my arms and look at the intricate henna paintings that cover my arms. My nails are long and my fingers are dainty. I look up and around and I see a balcony. I walk out to the balcony, pushing the sheer curtains out of the way and step onto the large balcony. I walk to the railing and place my hands on it, looking over the palace the spans out below me. Sam walks behind me and places his hands on my waist. I freeze as I feel his face move towards me. He leans to whisper in my ear.
"Just act natural. We're supposed to be in love." I relaxed a little bit and tried to make my self look happy. Through gritted teeth, I lean back into him and whisper.I keep my eyes on the desert palace outside the window.
"You have a lot of explaining to do." He sighs.
"You have no idea, Cassandra." He wraps his arms around me tighter and I find myself leaning back into him. No matter how weird this whole situation is, I can't deny how good it feels to be in his arms. I snap and come back to my senses. I stay in his arms, but my body begins to stiffen up again.
"Cassie, is something wrong?" I pull out of his hold and turn around to face him. I drop my smile and begin to walk inside. I hear him following me and hear the faint whispers coming from the sheer curtains blowing in the wind. He follows me over to the table and takes a seat across from me. The cold metal against my back gives me chills, but I have a feeling that a cold chair isn't the only thing giving me chills. My dress skirt is short, so I cross my legs and pull the fabric over to cover the tops of my thighs. I look over at Sam and give him a look as if saying, 'You better start explaining.'. He sighs and leans back in his chair.
"Cassie, I'm a time jumper. I'm one of the few left in the world. The rest of my people are contained in the glass balls that you found in your attic. Our work was done, and we were all put into those glass chambers to keep us safe during the years that we were not needed. But to put us into the glass chambers, the Elder had to put us into them with her magic. But the catch was, once the final person was put into their chamber, the Elder would lose her memory, and she would live many lives until she found us again. It's been almost two centuries since the Elder put us into the chambers. The only person that could release us from the chambers is the Elder herself." I put my hand up to pause him.
"So you're telling me that you're a time traveler?" He sighed.
"In the most basic terms, yes. I am a time travelers." I put my hand down onto the table I try to regulate my breathing. This day just keeps getting more strange. I'm convinced I fell over in the attic and hit my head really hard.
"Where are we right now?" I ask a question to divert myself from the growing panic in my chest. He smiles.
"We're in my favorite time period. We're in ancient Egypt. Another one of the perks of time jumping, we become a significant person from the time period. Of our choice of course." I look down at my hands and stare at some henna running the length on my arm. I look back at Sam.
"So who am I?"
"You are Queen Consort Nefertiti. She is far more beautiful than Cleopatra in my opinion." I gasp and look down at myself again. A queen consort? "Cassie, say something please, anything." I stare at my hands for a while longer before he gets out of his chair and comes to kneel beside me. "I haven't told you the most mind-blowing part yet." My eyes widen and I finally look at him.
"There's more?" My face pales as he smiles in a sad way. My mouth turns dry and I can feel my throat begin to close up.
"There's much much more I'm afraid." He shakes his head and puts his hand on my thigh. I turn to him and wait for his next piece of information.
"Cassie, you're the Elder Queen." I pause for a few seconds, searching his eyes for any sign that he's lying.
"You've got to be kidding me."
