Did I Say That I Need You?

"Katelyn, we're here," I whispered as I shook her lightly. She woke up and blinked her eyes for a few minutes before packing up her bag and standing up.

"Will you walk wit me," she asked nervously. "Sometimes my daddy forgets to come get me at the gate and I have to wait for a little bit."

I nodded, "Of course I'll stay with you sweetie."

We walked through the airport because, sure enough, just like she said, her father wasn't at the gate to get her. We made it all the way to baggage claim and she told me which bag was her's and waited for me to get both of mine. She held me hand as we waited and waited.... and waited.

"KATELYN," a worried voice called through the baggage claim area.

"UNCLE AUSTIN," she cheered! She ran off and right into Austin, my Austin's arms. "Rory, this is my Uncle Austin, he's totally cool, just like you!"

Austin looked up and smiled at me, "What a coincidence."

I nodded, "Must be."

"She's Ryan's daughter," he added. "You remember my cousin, right?"

I shook my head, "I only ever met your dad."

"Well, this is my cousin's daughter, he's having some trouble right now, so I'm going to be looking out for her," he whispered before kissing her cheeks.

She giggled and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck. "Can we get ice cream?"

"How about we get something for breakfast first" he chuckled.

She gasped and started giggling. "Can we get pancakes?!"

"I guess we can," he chuckled. "Care to join us," he asked as he looked at me.

I looked from Katelyn to Austin and nodded. "I'm starving and I-"

"You love pancakes, I remember," he interrupted. "Come on," he said in a cheery voice, nodding in the direction of his car.

I smiled and followed him to his Escalade and helped him get the three bags into the back. I watched as Austin buckled Katelyn up and couldn't help but smile when he opened the passenger door for me. I climbed in and waited for him. Once he was in and had his seat belt fastened he started the car, pulling away from the airport and started driving in the direction towards my house.

"So how was your flight," he asked once we stopped at a red light. He looked over and smiled at me, running a hand through his hair.

I returned the smile and tied my hair up. "It was good. I got to color, listen to music and watch movies with Katelyn."

Austin smiled as he looked at Katelyn through his rear view mirror. "She's something, isn't she?"

"Yeah," both Katelyn and I replied at the same time.

Austin chuckled and winked back at Kate. "You got it, Kid."

Austin pulled into a very familiar location, literally a two minute walk from my home. "Wh-what are we doing here?"

Austin got out of the car and got Kate before opening more door and offering me his hand. "This place has the best breakfast, you know that," he chuckled.

I shook my head, "I can't go in there, Austin."

"Katelyn, go grab us a seat outside okay?"

She nodded and took off in the direction of The Olive Cafe, the best breakfast place in this part of San Diego. It was also the place that Austin and I went the morning after our first time with each other. It became tradition to come every Saturday morning before we went to the beach. It was our thing.
